  4. Peterborough City Council proposes 4% council tax risepublished at 17:36

    Peterborough Council has announced how it expects to make up a £24m shortfall in its budget, external next year.

    Plans include putting council tax up by 4% and shutting the council officers between Christmas and New Year. 

    Today's announcement comes after the first half of its savings ideas were announced at the end of last year.

    Fraudsters are targeting elderly and vulnerable people in Cambridgeshire trying to get them to buy unnecessary, inappropriate and expensive mobility aids.

    Cambridgeshire police, external say the caller makes out they're from a GP surgery trying to book an appointment. 

    Similar calls have also been reported in the Fen Ditton area where a fraudulent company has been calling residents demanding bank details to buy medical equipment and vitamins.

    The Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire has joined calls for the drink-driving limit to be reduced

    A bill proposes amending the 1988 Road Traffic Act to lower the blood-alcohol concentration limit from 80mg alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg.  

    Sir Graham Bright said a lower limit would "help reduce the numbers of people dying or suffering life changing injuries on the roads".

    On the day it's been announced that Hinchingbrooke Hospital is to stay in special measures, the chairman of the trust that runs it says there's been a lot of "improvement".

    Alan Burns told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire he was "delighted" with the number of "good" ratings it had after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated it as "requires improvement", compared to the previous 'inadequate' rating. 

    He added: "We know that many of the things the inspector criticised us for have already been fixed in the three or four months between the inspection and now, and we know that that transition is continuing."

    It's been confirmed that two Tesco stores in Cambridgeshire will no longer open for 24 hours a day.

    They're in Fulbourn and March. The Royston Extra shop also won't stay open all day. 

    The company says the growth of online shopping means that certain shops had few customers during the night.

    A new service to help people with mental health problems has been used by more than 5,000 people in four months.

    The Psychological Wellbeing Service, external run by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, external started in September. 

    It works by patients being able to refer themselves for direct help instead of going to their doctor first. 

  11. Former TV star leaves court in tears after being found not guilty of child sex chargespublished at 17:00

    Former Dragons' Den star Doug Richard left a court this afternoon in tears after being cleared of child sex charges involving a 13-year-old from Norwich.

    A jury of eight women and four men deliberated for four hours and 15 minutes before finding Mr Richard not guilty of three counts of sexual activity with a child, one of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and a charge of paying for sexual services. 

    The American millionaire, who has set up Cambridge-based technology companies, told jurors that at the time he believed she was an experienced 17-year-old and insisted he would never "knowingly" have sex with a child.

    Millionaire businessman and former star of Dragon's Den Doug Richard has been found not guilty of child sex offences.

    Mr Richard, 57, of Islington, London, who has been involved with Cambridge-based technology firms, exchanged messages with the 13-year-old after meeting her on a "sugar daddy" website and went on to act out his fantasies when she travelled from Norwich to London to meet him.

    He admitted having sex with the girl but told the court he believed she was 17.

  14. Man made MBE for search and rescue workpublished at 15:39

    Paul Arnill, 46, from Doddington, near March, has been made an MBE for his services to Cambridgeshire Search and Rescue., external

    He set up the organisation at the request of Cambridgeshire police, who knew he was a founding member of Essex Search and Rescue.

    Mr Arnill, who stepped down from the organisation last year, was also recognised for serving the people of Tilney All Saints, Norfolk, where he spent seven years on the parish council.

    Amreen Aslan 25, was last seen at 12:00 on Thursday at her home address in Walden Grove, Huntingdon. 

    It's thought she went into Huntingdon town centre but didn't return, which police say is out of character

  18. Shop workers left 'anxious' after money taken from store tillpublished at 13:58

    Cash totalling £150 has been stolen from a till at The Pasta Shop in Queens Walk, Fletton, Peterborough.

    Cambridgeshire police, external have released images of the men they want to speak to following the raid at 09:00 on 20 January. 

    PCSO Matt Lauch said: "The shop owner and staff working in the store have been left upset and anxious following the incident so I urge anyone who can assist in identifying those responsible to contact police.”
