Cambridge United's chairman Dave Doggett says the club has made "an incredible turnaround" after posting a significant yearly operating profit for the first time since it went into administration in 2005.

The U's made a profit of just over £1.3m last season, mainly owing to their lucrative FA Cup tie against Manchester United. 

Dave Doggett told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, external: "I think we announced a loss of around £450,000 back in 2013 with turnover of around £1.6m. So we've more than doubled our revenue which is great."

The leader of Huntingdonshire District Council says plans to introduce a "red card" system, which could see recycling bins confiscated from households that repeatedly misuse them, are a last resort.

Conservative councillor Jason Ablewhite told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire repeat offenders are costing other taxpayers a lot of money, as contaminated recycling has to be sent to landfill.

Firefighters were hampered from tackling a blaze that destroyed a house at Thorney last night because a fire hydrant was "overgrown and not easily accessible," according to the incident commander.

Sean Brown, from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, says they had water relays in place, while officers tried to identify where the nearest hydrant was.

The cause of the blaze was accidental.

A Cambridgeshire animal shelter is trying to rehome 140 rats rescued from a property in Oxfordshire.

As reported in the Cambridge News, external, Woodgreen Animal Charity, based at Godmanchester, are trying to find new owners for the unwanted pet rodents. Some of the animals are on 'pregnancy watch' so there could soon be even more needing a new home.

Cambridge's Labour MP is calling for an "overarching review" into the collapse of the £800m UnitingCare contract to prove elderly care in Cambridgeshire.

The Health consortium pulled out of the NHS contract in early in December, after just eight months, saying it was "financially sustainable".

Speaking in the House of Commons this afternoon, Daniel Zeichner said the investigation also needed to "look at the role of NHS England and ministers".

A man in his 30s was left with serious injuries after being attacked with a craft knife in Huntingdon, external.

Police said the incident happened on Ambury Road at 15:00 on Friday by three men "of Asian appearance", aged between 15 and 20 years-old.

He was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital for treatment.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a block of flats in Cambridge.

Paramedics treated two children for smoke inhalation at the property in Minerva Way at 02:40 yesterday morning. 

The man has been bailed to appear at Parkside Police Station on 2 March.

A woman in her 80s has been left housebound after her mobility scooter was stolen outside her flat in Peterborough.

It was taken on Crown Street last Friday.

Police said the theft would have "a significant impact on her daily routine and independence" and called for witnesses to come forward.

Cambridge United has posted a yearly operating profit for the first time since entering administration in 2005. 

The U's made a profit of just over £1.3m last season.

Drawing Manchester United in the FA Cup raised around £2m, but ticket sales and merchandising revenue also increased following promotion back to the Football League, the club said.

An accidental fire that destroyed a house and a collection of classic cars at Thorney last night was spread by high winds, as Storm Imogen passed over the UK, external.

Incident commander Sean Brown, from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said strong winds "exacerbated" the blaze which took 60 firefighters to extinguish.

As well as exacerbating the Thorney fire, the winds of Storm Imogen brought a tree crashing down on the Bridge House pub by the river in St Neots yesterday.

As reported in the Cambridge News, external, customers had to be evacuated from the building yesterday lunchtime.

A notice on the front door this morning says the pub will be open for business again tomorrow.
