  1. Serious crash shuts A1 northboundpublished at 14:05

    Cambridgeshire Police has got in touch to say the A1 is currently closed northbound at Wansford, west of Peterborough, because of a crash between a lorry and two other vehicles.

    There are "suspected serious injuries" and the ambulance service and air ambulance are at the scene. 

    The carriageway is shut at the junction with the A47. We'll bring you more when we have it.

  2. Daffodils in bloom for village festivalpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 12 April 2016

    The organisers of the annual Daffodil Weekend, external in the village of Thriplow say the daffodils are "still looking great", despite concerns earlier in the year they may bloom too early.

    Up to 10,000 people are expected to attend the south Cambridgeshire village's "celebration of spring" starting on 16 April.

    Residents have planted 78,000 early and late varieties of daffodils to make sure there are enough on display.

    The Mayor of Huntingdon says the three years it's taken to get building work under way at the former tax office site at Chequers Court has "had an impact on footfall to shops with a couple of independent shops closing as a result".

    Bill Hensley says it's a disgrace that work to build a new retail area has taken so long.

    Developers, Churchmanor Estates, have now started work which is due to complete by next year. The firm said the new centre would offer a "significantly enhanced retail offer" for Huntingdon.

  6. Cambridgeshire sees highest number of call-outs to ambulance servicepublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 12 April 2016

    The East of England Ambulance Service says it's seen a major rise in demand with a 21% increase in emergency calls compared to March last year.

    The biggest jump in demand occurred in Cambridgeshire, where the service received 27% more 999 calls. 

    The most common calls were for falls and patients with breathing difficulties and chest pain.

    Two pedestrians injured in a crash on Madingley Road in Cambridge a week ago are making a recovery, say police.

    The pair were hit by a car when it left the main carriageway and mounted the kerb on 5 April. 

    Cambridgeshire Police, external said no arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing. The current condition of the cyclist who was also hurt is not yet known.

    A bungling thief who took an £8,000 bike from a Cambridge store was forced to abandon his loot, when he realised he'd picked one without pedals, external.

  9. Peterborough United striker Tom Nichols to miss rest of season with knee ligament tearpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 12 April 2016

    Peterborough United striker Tom Nichols has said he will miss the remainder of the season because of a medial ligament tear, external in his knee.

    The 22-year-old joined the League One side from Exeter in January and has scored one goal in seven appearances.

    He picked up the injury during the Posh's 2-1 defeat at home by Rochdale. Referring to his knee problem, Nichols tweeted: "Thanks for the messages everyone, I'll be back ready for next season stronger than ever."

  10. Newmarket's 350th anniversary: Free entry for localspublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 12 April 2016

    As Newmarket celebrates the 350th anniversary of racing, external in the town, the racecourse is today offering free entry for all Suffolk and Cambridgeshire residents who pre-registered, as the three-day Craven Meeting gets under way.

    The Jockey Club says the anniversary will be celebrated in different ways during the 39 fixtures staged at the Rowley Mile and the July courses throughout the year.

    The main launch is taking place at the Guineas Festival, which begins on 30 April.

    A body recovered from the sea in Dorset 11 days ago is believed to be that of the missing junior doctor Rose Polge.

    Dr Polge, 25, worked at Torbay Hospital in Devon but has not been seen since 12 February.

    The doctor's car was found in February at Ansteys Cove near Torquay, the town where she worked. Her family, who live in Melbourn in south Cambridgeshire, have been informed.

    Some independent shopkeepers in Huntingdon say the constant delays to the Chequers Court shopping centre building works is having a big impact on footfall.

    Work has now started on the site, three months later than expected, with the developer announcing that Marks and Spencer and Next have agreed to open stores in the new retail area.
