    University of Cambridge students have gone behind bars to study with inmates at a Category B prison, in a project studying the benefits of collaborative learning for prisoners, external.

    So far 22 prisoners have participated in the Learning Together initiative at HMP Grendon in Buckinghamshire, alongside students studying criminology at Cambridge.

    Researchers say the project offers prisoners a "meaningful vision for the future after release". One of the participating inmates has already had a paper accepted by an academic journal, they said.

    The government is promising to consider whether to recommend tougher sentences for death by dangerous driving, after an MP raised the case of 21-year-old Alex Jeffery, who was knocked down and killed in Cambridge

    Jack Mulcahy, 24, from Huntingdon, was jailed for four years and three months for killing Mr Jefferey in 2014. He was also banned from driving for five years. 

    Heidi Allen, the Conservative MP for South Cambridgeshire, told the Commons the sentence was too lenient.

    Vandals who "beheaded" a statue in a Cambridgeshire church carried out a "hate crime and a crime against our heritage", an archaeologist has said.

    As reported in the Cambridge News, external, the attack on the 17th Century Thomas Wendy memorial at All Saints in Haslingfield took place some time between 10 and 24 April.

    The head of his son Sir William Wendy, who commissioned the monument, had been chopped off and stolen (shown above before and after).

    Archaeologist Prof Norman Hammond, who photographed the damage, said it was a "hate crime directed at the church".  

    A church collection box was also forced open, but was empty.

    A new sponsorship deal for Cambridge United, that will see the Abbey Stadium renamed, external the Cambs Glass Stadium, has been welcomed by a director at the club.

    Cambridge-based Cambs Glass, sponsors of the dugouts this season, is becoming the official stadium naming rights partner, in what is described as a "significant financial agreement".

    Dave Matthew-Jones, who is a former chairman of the supporters club, told the BBC: "It is really important to the club and it is good to have a sponsor that is local and one which is involved in the club."

    The lottery-winning family of a little girl who had half her brain removed say they will use part of the money to pay back their "amazing" community, who raised funds to buy her a special bed

    Lorraine Daniels, 41, and her father Derek Daniels, 77, from Whittlesey won £729,026 in last Wednesday's draw.

    Recent fundraising events were held to buy a bed for Lorraine's six-year-old daughter Lotus, who currently sleeps in her mother's bed, so they can manage her seizures.

    Ms Daniels said: "Who would have thought that when we placed that order, before the bed had even arrived, I would have won the Lottery and can now pay back the community so the money can go to another worthy cause."

    A man from Wisbech who was arrested on suspicion of murder is expected to remain in hospital until tomorrow, according to police. 

    The 43-year-old man was arrested after a woman's body was found at a property in Mill Close on Sunday night. He was taken to hospital to be treated for "minor injuries".

    A post-mortem examination on the woman is taking place this afternoon.

    From the start of next season, the Abbey Stadium will officially be known as the Cambs Glass Stadium, as part of a new sponsorship deal, external.

    Cambridge United's chief executive Jez George told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, external the new stadium naming rights deal with Cambs Glass would "drive the club forward".  

    Chairman Dave Doggett said: "It will always be the Abbey Stadium to our fans, but we live in a commercial world and this is a significant financial benefit to the club, which will allow us to continue investing in the first-team squad."

    Derek Daniels, 77, and his daughter, Lorraine Daniels, 41, from Whittlesey, are sharing a £2,187,078 jackpot with five other winners.

    They say they plan to pay back local people who raised funds recently to allow Lorraine's disabled daughter Lotus to have a specialist bed.

    The jury decided the actions of match commander Ch Supt David Duckenfield amounted to "gross negligence" due to a breach of his duty of care for fans.

    Christian Morris, who as an 18-year-old Liverpool supporter was at Hillsborough for the FA Cup semi-final, said: "There's still anger in there and a lot of hurt."
