    A man has been jailed for 18 months for attacking a parking warden.

    The warden was left with semi-permanent nerve damage after he was attacked in Peterborough.

    Shamal Asaad, 30, assaulted the man after he gave him a penalty charge notice.

    The attack was filmed by the officer's body camera.

    A crowdfunding page set up to pay for a new wheelchair for a Sawston woman has raised nearly £1,500. 

    The distinctively painted electric wheelchair belonging to Rachel Mitton was stolen from a van in Wisbech last Friday, external.

    She says it gives her "freedom" and she relies on it to get around, as she suffers from a severe progressive and debilitating illnesses. 

    She says since it's gone she's "become the needy person that no-one wants to be".

    The fund is hoping to raise £8,500.

  5. Ticket attack: Parking officer now needs 'constant pain relief'published at 14:37 British Summer Time 8 September 2016

    Members of the public came to the parking warden's assistance after he was assaulted and he was taken to hospital.

    Although he has since returned to work, the officer said he has been left with semi-permanent nerve damage for which he needs "constant pain relief".

    He also said walking was "uncomfortable" and he was "much more apprehensive".

    At Peterborough Crown Court today, Shamal Asaad, 30, of Kipling Court, Peterborough, was sentenced to 18 months in jail, with a further three months each for two further charges of destroying and damaging property, to run concurrently.

    After the initial aggression, the parking warden called for police back-up and then Shamal Asaad got into his car and drove off.

    Minutes later the officer saw the car parked in the street again, he approached it and was attacked by Asaad.

    The officer can be heard shouting "he's grabbed my equipment" as he fell to the ground.

    "I will never forget the feeling of panic when I was lying on the ground with my attacker's face, centimetres from mine, contorted with rage. It was like something out of a horror film," the officer said.    

  7. Ticket attack: Parking warden left 'terrified'published at 14:27 British Summer Time 8 September 2016

    The parking warden, who works for Peterborough City Council, described the attack on him as "one of the most terrifying of my life".

    He issued Shamal Asaad with a ticket for parking illegally in a residential permit area in the city.

    Asaad then emerged from a nearby house, took the ticket from the car and began waving it in the officer's face.

    He appears to complain it is the second ticket he has received that day.

    The officer, who wanted to remain anonymous, can be heard saying: "Back off, I'm warning you, back off."

    Asaad can be seen demanding the officer takes the ticket back and swears several times before he assaults him.

    We've just heard from police that £25,000 was stolen in the cash machine ram-raid at the Spar on Cambridge Street, St Neots, during the night.

    At about 02:30, a JCB forklift truck ripped the ATM from the wall and it was then loaded on to what police believe was a white pick-up truck.

    It then fled the scene, heading towards Cromwell Road with a dark saloon.

    Police said the raid caused "significant damage", as seen in the picture below and the store remains shut.

    A man has been jailed for 18 months for attacking a traffic warden over a parking ticket.

    He was assaulted by Shamal Karim Asaad (pictured), 30, on Hankey Street, Peterborough, after he gave him a penalty charge notice (PCN) for parking illegally in a permit area last September.

    The officer's bodycam shows him repeatedly telling a furious Asaad to "back off" before he was struck and fell, breaking his leg.

    Asaad denied grievous bodily harm, but was found guilty and given a custodial sentence at Peterborough Crown Court.

    He was also sentenced to three months each for two further charges of destroying and damaging property, which will run concurrent.

    Police investigations are continuing after a suspicious suitcase was discovered at Barclays bank on Market Hill in Huntingdon yesterday.

    Part of the road was closed on Wednesday afternoon, but the barriers were taken down at 17:30 and the road re-opened.

    Cambridgeshire Police says a robot entered the bank and examined the case, which was believed to be empty.

  12. St Neots Spar closed until further noticepublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 8 September 2016

    The Spar in St Neots has been shut after its cash machine was ripped from the outside wall in the early hours of this morning. 

    Cambridgeshire Police is trying to trace the ATM, which was taken in the raid.

    Cambridgeshire Police has confirmed a "lift truck" was used to pull a cash machine from the wall of a Spar store in St Neots. 

    Officers were called to the theft in the early hours on Steeple Court, Cambridge Street.

    The picture below shows the shop before it was raided.

    Meanwhile, a dilapidated church on Ermine Street North in Papworth Everard is set to be demolished. 

    The go-ahead to knock down the St Francis Of Assisi Roman Catholic Church was also taken by South Cambridgeshire District Council, external yesterday.

    We're not going to "pop any champagne corks", says Martin Middleton, vice chair of the Bassingbourn Snowsports Centre.  

    It comes after South Cambridgeshire District Council, external approved the building of a new access road to the dry ski slope, which has been redundant since the barracks were mothballed.

    He says he's "pleased" with the verdict, but adds he's realistic, saying people "still might not be able to use" the slope if other stages in the planning process fall through.

  17. Re-opening of dry ski slope in Bassingbourn moves a step closerpublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 8 September 2016

    Plans to allow Bassingbourn Dry Ski Slope to re-open have moved a step closer. 

    South Cambridgeshire District Council, external has approved plans to allow a separate access road on Guise Lane to be built so the site can be accessed independently. 

    It now means negotiations can take place between the Snowsports Centre, external and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, external (DIO) to see if it can rent or buy the sports facility off the government.

  19. Woman 'desperate' to get stolen wheelchair backpublished at 08:35 British Summer Time 8 September 2016

    Yesterday we reported the story that thieves stole a van containing a £8,500 specially-adapted wheelchair, external from Wisbech. 

    The chair was used by Rachel Mitton, from Sawston, who suffers from severe fibromyalgia, a very painful rheumatic condition. 

    I went to meet her this morning and she was visibly upset and is "desperate to get it back".
