Fire crews have now left the site of yesterday's recycling plant fire in St Ives, having spent the night damping down.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue has just told us the fire was accidental. It is believed the most likely cause was a lithium battery that was caught up in recycled electrical items.

The fire broke out at the plant, off Caxton Road, just after 14:20 yesterday.

Station commander Dave Lynch, one of the officers in charge of the incident, said: "The main building where the fire started has been completely destroyed, however, fire crews worked extremely hard to prevent the fire from spreading anywhere else."

He added the situation could have been a lot worse, given the number of other industrial units and businesses in very close proximity.

The future of Wisbech Castle was the subject of an extraordinary meeting of the town council last night.

The site is currently owned by Cambridgeshire County Council, but it wants to sell it to raise money for services.

The first castle was built on the site in the town centre nearly 1,000 years ago, but there are fears it could fall into private ownership.

Roger Powell, chairman of the The Friends of Wisbech and Fenland Museum, external, says its history means it should be kept as a civic amenity.

"I think it would be criminal if the building fell into private hands," he said.

I'm at the Caxton Road site where a fire's been blazing at an industrial estate for a while now.

It took place on the industrial estate at 14:40 this afternoon.

I've covered many such fires for the BBC over the years, but I have to say as far as sheer scale of number of appliances and emergency services go, this is pretty much up there with the biggest of them.
