"We're in a period of low commodity prices and we're needing these payments to make farming stack up, and I would say at the moment at present commodity levels 80% of the farms are not viable without these payments."

  19. 'Not everyone who calls us needs us,' says ambulance chiefpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Kate Scotter
    BBC News

People in the East of England are being asked to help decrease demand on the region's ambulance service.

Robert Morton, the chief executive of the East of England Ambulance Service, says there is a "huge capacity gap" between the number of calls the service receives and the number of staff it has.

"Unless you have an ambulance at every crossroad, you are not going to be everywhere within eight minutes, that's a fact of life," he said.

"We need support from the community to drive down demand. Frankly, not everybody who calls us needs us."

  20. Ambulance service managers to respond to callspublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Kate Scotter
    BBC News

The chief executive of the region's ambulance service said an "explosion" in demand has led to managers being asked to respond to calls.

    Robert Morton

Bosses at the East of England Ambulance Service, external have been told they will have to do a minimum of two shifts a week responding to calls.

Speaking after today's board meeting, external, chief executive Robert Morton said it was not a "sustainable" way of working in the long term.

"Right now the priority is for us to respond to our patients, improve our response times and support our staff," he said.

"One of the ways we feel we can do that right now is to ask our managers to go out and respond.

"We recognise it's not sustainable in the long term and we recognise that there are elements of our managerial workload which simply are not going to get done, but patients and staff have to be the priority."
