Views are being sought for a multi-million pound road scheme through Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Highways England, external has opened a consultation into a new 10-mile (16km) dual carriageway from the Black Cat roundabout at Roxton to the Caxton Gibbet junction.

The scheme would improve journeys between Milton Keynes and Cambridge, it said.

Two web chats will take place, on 2 July from 10:00 to 14:00 and on 16 July from 14:00 to 18:00.

Teams will also be on hand to answer phone calls on 29 June from 13:00 to 18:00 and 13 July from 10:00 to 14:00 on 0800 640 4956.

A convoy of taxi drivers has joined a protest on Mill Road bridge in Cambridge, where work is due to start to widen the pavement and restrict road traffic passing over the railway.

Chants of "Don't Kill Mill Road" were directed at local authorities who are proposing to ban cars from the bridge to give pedestrians room to social distance.

Traders including Pam Wesson of Fantazia fear this will cut their takings and threaten their businesses.

"You can't just hop on a bike and cruise up and down this little pleasure garden that they think you're going to turn the road into," she said.

How three different places of worship in Cambridge are preparing to reopen from 4 July.

Firefighters have been tackling a blaze that broke out at a goods distribution centre in Peterborough.

It is believed about 50 tonnes of cardboard were alight next to the staff building at the Amazon depot in Flaxley Road.

Amazon, external said none of its staff were hurt, but the fire forced the firm to evacuate its distribution centre.

The fire started at lunchtime and several fire engines and appliances were sent by Cambridgeshire Fire Service, external.

Organisers of a festival that celebrates Plough Monday are defending their decision to cancel next year's event.

The Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival, external attracts crowds to the village near Peterborough each January, but a lack of advice on mass gatherings from the government has led it to call it off, they said.

Roger Boon, directors of the festival, said: "We spent significant funds running the 2020 festival and money made at that event would normally be progressively spent or pledged to cover infrastructure, performing artists and other costs of staging the next festival.

"By cancelling now, we can secure festival funding for future years, when we are assured that the event can take place.

"As a not-for-profit organisation we have limited reserves so we must act prudently."

The next event is due to go ahead in January 2022.

After its doors were closed on 19 March, another cathedral is preparing to reopen for private prayer.

Ely Cathedral , externalsaid the initial plans are to let parishioners in from Wednesday to Saturday from 3 July, between 11.00 and 14:00, with Sundays put aside for the clergy to live-stream services.

Staff will be on hand and to guide worshippers through hand sanitiser stations, social distancing and limits on numbers.

The cafe, shop, stained glass museum and toilets will be shut.

The Very Reverend Mark Bonney, Dean of Ely, said: "The preparation for this to be safe is going to be different for every building, and the safety of all is paramount."

Peterborough Cathedral, external is reopening for prayer and for people to light candles but with coronavirus control measures in place.

The number of people allowed in at any one time will be limited and it is suggested people visit for no longer than 15 minutes.

There are hand-sanitising stations, a one-way system around the cathedral and signage to remind people about social distancing.

Shepreth Wildlife Park will reopen on Monday, but with a new socially-distanced walkway path.

Visitors will need to purchase an online ticket for entrance to the Cambridgeshire zoo which is not allowed to accept walk-ins due to strict regulations introduced for the Covid-19 pandemic.

A man has been charged with the theft of a hanging basket from outside a house in Peterborough.

Cambridgeshire Police said the 42-year-old was arrested in Princes Street.

He has been bailed to appear at Peterborough Magistrates' Court next month.
