Cambridgeshire County Council has sought advice from Public Health England, external over the apparent disparity between the county’s infection rate and the number of outbreaks in care homes.

A council report, which refers to data provided by care homes to Public Health England, shows that as of 17 May, some 64 out of 131 care homes in the county reported a suspected or confirmed outbreak and in Peterborough it was 15 out of 35 care homes – 43%.

"This is higher than the national figure of 37.8% of homes with a suspected or confirmed outbreak," the report said.

The document also said that as of 28 May, the rate of Covid-19 infections in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough local authority areas was 178.4 per 100,000 people and 207.9 per 100,000 people respectively, which is "comparatively lower than the overall rate in England of 269.6 per 100,000".

At a meeting of the adult’s committee, council service director for adults and safeguarding, Charlotte Black, said the disparity was "something we are trying to understand at the moment – we have sought advice from Public Health England".

She suggested it may be linked to how the data is recorded and reported, but said the council is "trying to get an official explanation for why that might be".

A blood donor centre has taken more than 136 convalescent donations from people who have recovered from Covid-19.

The centre in Bridge Street, Luton is one of a number across the region involved in the collection of convalescent plasma as part of a major coronavirus treatment trial.

The antibody-rich plasma of people who have recovered can be transfused into people who are struggling to develop their own immune response.

If the trial is successful, use of the plasma will be rolled-out in hospitals.

Elsewhere in the region, a further 10 donations have been made at the Long Road blood donor centre in Cambridge.

NHS Blood and Transplant’s Prof David Roberts said more donors were needed "to try and save lives".

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has hit out at the decision of his fellow League One clubs to end the season early.

He posted on Twitter: "The state of my timeline full of fans loving the fact that 18 'football clubs' voted to not play football & the ramifications of it. Bravo to the 4 Football clubs who did vote to play on."

He then used an expletive to suggest the Football League had been chaotic in its handling of the situation due to coronavirus.

He signed off with: "Enjoy your summer football fans."
