A carer caught on CCTV abusing a dementia sufferer by slapping her, twisting her wrist and fingers and forcefully ramming objects into her mouth to give her tablets has been jailed.

Maurice Campbell, 56, and his wife Deborah were caught after the 85-year-old victim's family installed a camera at her Peterborough home.

The pair, of Illston Place, Peterborough, both pleaded guilty to ill-treating and wilfully neglecting the victim between 30 March and 10 May. Maurice Campbell was jailed for two years, four months at Peterborough Crown Court, and his wife will be sentenced on 10 January.

Det Con Les Ellmer, who investigated, said: "This case involved some of the most shocking abuse of an elderly and vulnerable victim that I have come across in my career and today's sentencing reflects that.

"Due to her dementia, the victim struggles to communicate and could not provide a witness statement, so without the CCTV in her bedroom no-one would have been any the wiser to the abuse she was receiving."

  18. 'Ghost' roundabout: I've found the 'masterplan'published at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2016

    David Keller
    BBC News

I've been asking Auntie Google a few questions and have found the "masterplan" for the new circular feature on Tenison Road in Cambridge that's been baffling residents.

You can download the PDF file for yourself here, external.

Its purpose, according to the council document, is to slow traffic approaching the corner, using "place-making design to break up the linear carriageway and increase driver awareness".

It's also said to reduce drifting across the road and improve the quality of the "streetscene".

It's all part of the concept of "shared space, external" often seen in the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries, where the definitions between road and pavement are minimised to artificially slow down traffic. Between you and me, it's another way of doing a speed bump.

I guess only time will tell if it works here...

  19. Autumn weather 'like black ice' for train travelpublished at 16:51 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2016

Why does the autumn weather affect our rail services ? Greater Anglia has the answer, external.

    • Wet weather and leaf mulch that sticks to rail tracks gets compressed and hardened by the train wheels, creating a slippery layer similar to black ice
    • Wheels lose grip and can be damaged, and the mulch can also cause electrical faults
    • Six specialist trains to clean tracks and remove vegetation have been brought in by Network Rail - and a specially adapted Land Rover, known as a Sand Rover, will clean the track between Marks Tey and Sudbury
    • A mobile wheel lathe at the Norwich depot will fix train wheels damaged by slippery rails, to bring them back into service
  20. Essex tops the table for winter collissionspublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2016

The East of England Ambulance Service, external (EEAS) is urging road users to take extra care to avoid winter collisions.

Last winter, their control rooms handled nearly 8,000 calls about road traffic collisions between November 2015 and February 2016. This is a county breakdown of the number attended:

    • Essex - 1,579
    • Hertfordshire - 996
    • Norfolk - 922
    • Cambridgeshire - 846
    • Suffolk - 657
    • Bedfordshire - 654

In a push to reduce the number of incidents this year, EEAS is promoting Brake's Road Safety Week, external, which has this advice for drivers:

    • Wear hi-vis clothing and use lights in walking or cycling in the dark
    • Keep to speed limits and drive to road conditions
    • Leave an appropriate distance between your vehicle and the one ahead
    • Allow extra time to get to your destination, particularly in icy condtions
    • Don't drink and drive
