A village campaign group says it is "shocked and appalled" a 10-lane interchange will be built at Brampton as part of the A14 upgrade

The Brampton A14 Campaign Group has been concerned about air pollution for years and believes the new A1/A14 will make matters much worse.

Eileen Collier, who chairs the group, says "the government needs to take it seriously" and find alternatives like "putting freight on the rail from Felixstowe up to Nuneaton".

Ms Collier also said the Cambridge to Oxford rail link should be a priority.

  4. Tales from the riverbank: River Nene inspires music projectpublished at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2016

    Alex Pope
    BBC Local Live

The River Nene has become the inspiration for a classical musical project.

Benjamin Till, from Higham Ferrers, has this morning set off on a 100-mile walk that will take him from the start of the River Nene in Badby, to its end in Wisbech.

For the next five days he'll listen to the river to hear its tunes and pitch to help him create the piece, titled Source to the Sea.

He says he's "slightly terrified" by the task in hand, and thinks one of the biggest issues could be how to pronounce Nene, as it's said differently depending whether you come from Northamptonshire or Cambridgeshire.

He could make his debut at Notts County on Sunday, having played 70 minutes for the reserves in midweek.

"I was quite emotional when I got the injury," he said. "It was a new club, I'd done well in pre-season then I hit rock bottom.

"I'm all good now. I'm hoping I've done enough to impress the gaffer and be in the squad on Sunday."

Although the number of people drinking and driving has reduced over recent years, police say the Christmas period sees a spike in offences as "more people are tempted to drink or take drugs before getting behind the wheel of a car".

  15. Close guided busway if expense continues, says UKIP councillorpublished at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    Orla Moore
    BBC Local Live

A UKIP councillor says Cambridgeshire's guided busway should be shut down if taxpayers continue to foot the bill for its upkeep.

The call comes as contractor BAM Nuttall has been told it may have to stump up a £37m repair bill. An independent report found problems with foundations and concrete sections on the route between Cambridge and St Ives.

Paul Bullen, UKIP group leader (pictured), asked a county council meeting: "Why did we build a guided busway that was untried, untested and untrusted on the Fens?"

    UKIP councillor Paul Bullen

"We have to draw a line in the sand," he told BBC Look East. "We cannot keep spending taxpayers' money.

"If we get to a point that we've spent far too much that we can't throw any more money at it then yes, we could well have to close the busway."

    Cambridgeshire's guided busway

Conservative councillor Ian Bates, who represents the Hemingfords and Fenstanton, defended the busway's success, saying 17m people have used it since it started in 2011, adding it will form a vital connection through the new Northstowe development.

Cambridgeshire County Council, external says it hasn't ruled out taking legal action against BAM Nuttall if a settlement can't be reached.

Adrian Savory, operations director at BAM Nuttall, said the company is "totally committed to ensuring that the busway performs as it should".

"If there is anything wrong with the busway for which BAM Nuttall is responsible, BAM Nuttall will put it right," he said.

    Nikki Fox
    BBC Look East

I’ve not heard of any inappropriate calls today to our ambulance control rooms.

However, this year the service says it's had calls from people calling about an injured seagull, an injured squirrel and a hoax call about a "drowning goldfish".

    Say no more.

  18. Ambulance Live: The ups and downs of being a paramedicpublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    Martin Barber
    BBC News

You might remember Larry from this morning. He couldn't apologise enough for "bothering" the East of England Ambulance Service crew after he fell and banged his head on a radiator.

Patients are not always as nice.

Yesterday, John (pictured) was called to a collapse in a cafe toilet. He went to assist and looked over the top of the door to be met by a hail of abuse from a man who was clearly a street sleeper.

    John the paramedic

"I'm only sleeping. Why don't you f... off, why do you care when I'm coming out," the person said.

He may have only wanted somewhere warm to sleep but of course that took John out of the system.

So while John was waiting to ensure the man could leave under his own steam, it meant he wasn't available to assist other patients potentially facing a life-threatening situation.
