Claudia Hartley, a vet from Cambridgeshire, is hoping she can help partially restore her sight.

"That's quite miserable for an animal as intelligent as an orangutan," Ms Hartley said.

"It's akin to a human being in a prison cell, and that's her life 24/7. It's the best the charity, the Orangutan Foundation, can offer her because it keeps her safe, it keeps her fed."

After examining the orangutan in September, Ms Hartley said there was a "good chance" of restoring sufficient sight in Aan's right eye to enable her to return to the wild.

Claudia Hartley, a vet from Cambridge, hopes she can save the damaged eye, leaving the animal, who has been in captivity in Borneo since the attack, able to fend for herself in the wild.

The operation is planned for February.

  20. 'Collision at 142mph has only one outcome' says former roads policing officerpublished at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

Yesterday we reported on biker Simon Hackett, given a 60-day driving ban after he was caught speeding at 142mph (229km/h) on the A47 at Terrington St John.

Chris Spinks, former head of roads policing in Norfolk said it was rare for people to be travelling at this sort of speed "well in excess of a mile every 30 seconds" and very few people were able to drive at those speeds and be in full control of their vehicle.

"The thought of somebody going at those speeds weaving in and out of traffic doesn't bear thinking about... if you're involved in a collision at that speed I can only envisage one outcome for a motorcyclist - and that's fatal".

Hackett, 45, from Wisbech, was also ordered to pay a fine and costs amounting to just over £350, at Norwich Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Mr Sprinks said he could see why people might think it a light sentence, compared with a 12-month ban for drink- or drug-driving, but that "two months without a licence will cause problems" for the self-employed carpenter and may cost him a financial penalty when he has to insure his vehicles again.
