Is it bin day tomorrow? What colour bin?

We're plagued by those all-important questions every week, but it's about to get a bit more tricky at the end of the month for people in the south of the county.

Bin collection days are set to change, external as South Cambs District Council and Cambridge City Council look to save money by sharing collection rounds.

The changes, coming into effect on Monday, 27 February, will affect more than 130,000 households across the two council areas.

It could mean a change to bin collection day, to the sequence in which black or blue and green bins are collected, or to the time of their collection.

In some cases during the changeover, a small number of homes may experience a longer gap between collections.

The councils say as a result of the new rounds, collection lorries will travel 20,000 fewer miles per year and reduce traffic and emissions.

They add the changes will contribute £150,000 towards a savings target of £700,000 over three years.

Central government cuts to council funding are cited as the need to make savings.

They were owned by two local businesses and a member of the public.

    Police are appealing for witnesses.

  4. Tylicki philosophical about changes in his lifepublished at 13:18 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

Freddy Tylicki, a former Newmarket-based jockey who has had no movement in the lower half of his body since a fall at Kempton on 31 October, says: "You are having to accept things in a different way, which can trouble you.

"You've got good days and bad days, but at the moment I'm taking every day as it comes.

"For me that's the best way to handle the situation," he added.

He continued: "The first time I woke up after the operation - I was lying in bed and I knew I couldn't feel anything. That's when I knew I was in trouble.

"Shortly after that, the doctor filled me in on what happened - the injuries I'd received. I just had to get cracking from then on."

"You get to learn an awful lot. Having had a certain level of fitness before has helped me massively in some ways.

"I'm living my life day to day. The immune system is very low and infections can happen easily, but I'm concentrating on my rehab and physio."

  5. Support for paralysed jockey 'tremendous'published at 11:55 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

Former jockey Freddy Tylicki, who has been paralysed since a fall last year at Kempton, says the support he's had has been "tremendous".

Tylicki, who was based at Newmarket, has been visited by a variety of jockeys and trainers, and received widespread support on social media from racing fans.

"The racing community is little compared to everything else in the world but there's some fantastic people in it - the support I've been getting is tremendous and unbelievable," he said.

"I don't quite know how to thank everyone. It's been absolutely amazing."

A GoFundMe page to raise money to help Freddy Tylicki's recovery, set up by At The Races television presenter Matt Chapman, collected more than £330,000.

  6. Paralysed rider has 'no regrets' about becoming a jockeypublished at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

Former Newmarket-based jockey Freddy Tylicki says he has no regrets about becoming a rider, despite a fall last year that left him paralysed from the waist down.

    Freddy Tylicki

Tylicki, 30, was injured in a four-horse pile-up at Kempton on 31 October.

Tylicki's life changed forever at what should have been a routine Monday meeting at Kempton Park in Surrey.

He fell heavily from his mount, Nellie Dean, when appearing to clip heels with leader and eventual winner Madame Butterfly as the field rounded the home turn.

"A few of my colleagues have watched the fall - I haven't myself," he said. "They were saying I'm actually very lucky to be here.

"There's no point for me to watch it. I was there, that's enough. I do remember everything. Unfortunately that's racing in a way."

  7. 'Grumpy' swans in kayak canal rescuepublished at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    Helen Burchell
    BBC News

Two "grumpy and hungry" swans had to be rescued after getting themselves stuck in part of a drainage canal.

The birds had apparently been trapped there for "several weeks and were deteriorating fast" when a member of the public alerted Fenland Animal Rescue to their plight.

A kayaker and swimmer took to the water in Hampton, Peterborough, and discovered the swans were uninjured but "unfortunately stuck", and with little food available both were "grumpy and underweight".

"Swan rescues can often be difficult, but when faced with water, unknown obstacles, little light and a couple of angry birds, they can become dangerous," said the charity's Josh Flanagan.

However, they managed to capture both birds, one at a time, in cold and dark conditions.

The swans have now been moved to open water close-by, and with a plentiful supply of food and room to swim around, both seem to be carrying on as if nothing happened, Mr Flanagan said.

  9. 'We have a duty to British nationals'published at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    Adam Jinkerson
    BBC Local Live

Following on from Heidi Allen's comments over citizen rights after Brexit, the Tory MP for North West Cambridgeshire, Shailesh Vara, has warned that prioritising the rights of EU nationals in the UK over UK nationals abroad could backfire.

    Shailesh Vara

"We, as British parliamentarians, have a duty to British nationals living overseas," he said.

"If we secure the rights of foreigners living in this country before they are looked after, we neglect our duty."

The amendment to the Brexit bill to protect the rights of EU nationals living in the UK in the event that Brexit negotiations fail, proposed by the Labour Party, will come before the Commons tomorrow.

  12. MPs give their views over rights of citizens following Brexitpublished at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2017

    Adam Jinkerson
    BBC Local Live

Two Cambridgeshire MPs have been discussing the rights of EU nationals living in the UK, and British citizens living abroad, after Brexit.

Heidi Allen, MP for South Cambridgeshire, is one of a number of Tories threatening to rebel against the government, unless guarantees can be made that EU nationals living in the UK will be allowed to stay post-Brexit.

    Heidi Allen

Mrs Allen made her arguments in the House of Commons yesterday as MPs debated amendments to the Article 50 bill.

"In South Cambridgeshire we are absolutely bursting with EU citizens from every nation in the EU. They have families, they have relatives," she said.

"And it's not actually the EU citizens that are worried, it's the communities that wrap around them.

"They are part of their communities too."

We'll bring you the views of MP for North West Cambridgeshire, Shailesh Vara, shortly.

  19. Who's going to be Cambridgeshire and Peterborough's first mayor?published at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2017

    Hannah Olsson
    BBC Radio Cambridgeshire political reporter

We now have all of the political candidates for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough mayoral election.

There's still three months to go before the election on 4 May, but it won't be long before the candidates start campaigning hard for our vote.

We are a largely blue county, with the vast majority of our councils being Conservative led and all but one of our MPs also representing the party.

But that doesn't necessarily mean this is an easy win for Conservative James Palmer.

    Ballot box

The mayor is a new job and the closest comparison we have is the election of the police and crime commissioner (PCC) - an individual role, with each of the parties putting forward one candidate.

Although Conservative Jason Ablewhite won the last PCC election, Labour's candidate Dave Baigent gave him a run for his money, with the vote going to the second round of counting

We've also seen other parts of the country where areas with Conservative councils have elected an independent PCC

Finally, personality could be as important as policies for voters, and if 2016 taught us anything, it's not to second guess the electorate.

Weather graphic for 05:00, showing rain over most of East Anglia

The east of the region is expected to remain cloudy tomorrow, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. In the west there's a greater chance of it becoming drier, with a few showers and some brightness and sunshine.

    Temperatures climbing to 8C (46F).
