  12. 'Whole generation let down' by care home servicespublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 11 April 2017

    Caroline Kingdon
    BBC Local Live

Back to our story on the quality of care homes, which has been highlighted by the charity Independent Age, external

Its research shows a stark variation of care, with Buckinghamshire  and Norfolk having the highest percentage of "inadequate" or "needs improvement" ratings in the east of England - 31% and 29.7% respectively.

This map show she number of individual care homes in these two categories in each local authority area (Bucks doesn't feature in the charity's version of the eastern region):

Nadra Ahmed is the executive chairman of the National Care Association, external . She told me that a "whole generation is being let down".

"The person losing out the most is the service user... a person who's vulnerable and requires a service they've been promised and have already paid for, through taxes and national insurance... we should hang our heads in shame over this," she said.

In the spring budget, the government announced £2bn of funding for social care. But Ms Ahmed says that when the details are looked at closely, the money isn't for frontline services - instead it will go to local authorities.

  14. Graffiti removal costs 'could increase'published at 12:03 British Summer Time 11 April 2017

    Helen Burchell
    BBC News

It's likely to take one more day to clean Latin graffiti off four luxury homes in Cambridge, the developer has told us.

Cleaners removing graffiti from the houses

Vandals struck at the site of the £1.25m homes on Water Street, Chesterton, last Tuesday.

It's thought the words - Locus in Domos Loci Populum - are meant to mean "local homes for local people". Lots of experts have commented on the meaning… but we're pretty sure the vandals didn't scratch their heads too much and just used Google Translate.

Paul Ursell, from HC Moss (Builders) Ltd, said last week they  hoped to have the houses cleaned within two days , which would cost the company about £4,000.

Well, it's day two now, and not a lot of the paint seems to have gone.

Mr Ursell said it's going to take an extra day, but they've already cleaned graffiti from windows and frames which was a longer job than taking it off the paintwork and bricks.

He told us last week the bill could rise if removal work took longer and now he's confirmed they are "quite possibly" looking at an increase in costs.

The building company will also be left with another job once the graffiti's removed.

Workmen will have to either repaint the dark grey cladding, or in the "worst case scenario", replace the boards, he said.

We'll take another look later this week and see how it's going.

With "Monkmania" taking the world by storm, here's how some of the national papers reported on the rise... and fall... of Wolfson College team captain, Eric Monkman.

The Cambridge student took the internet by storm in the early rounds of University Challenge with his extravagant facial expressions, upward inflections on his answers and overall genius.

  19. University Challenge: Prof Stephen Hawking presents winner's trophy published at 09:48 British Summer Time 11 April 2017

    Adam Jinkerson
    BBC Local Live

Another surprise on last night's University Challenge was the cameo appearance from Prof Stephen Hawking.

He presented the winning team, Oxford's Balliol College, with a trophy at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge - and revealed he was a long-time fan of the show.

Stephen Hawking presenting the winners trophy

Prof Hawking told the two teams: "I have said in the past that it is not clear whether intelligence has any long-term survival value - bacteria multiply and flourish without it.

"But it is one of the most admirable qualities, especially when displayed by such young minds.

"Many congratulations to both teams, but especially to Balliol College Oxford on becoming series champions on University Challenge, a programme I have long enjoyed."

It was only the second time in the quiz's 55-year history that the trophy presentation took place outside the studio.

In the segment, Jeremy Paxman congratulated the winners and told Cambridge's Wolfson College team there was "no shame in being runners-up".
