It may be the final of University Challenge tonight, featuring a team from Wolfson College in Cambridge, but something tells us that not everyone will be tuning in to see some of the greatest minds at work.

Tonight's final sees the return of a Cambridge contestant that has become a social media hit - Eric Monkman.

    Eric Monkman

His facial expressions and tendency to deliver answers with an upward inflection won him a place in the hearts of many viewers.

Canadian Monkman has  inspired  a legion of online fans who identified themselves with the hashtag #monkmania.

"I would say Monkman is in the all time top five [contestants]," The Independent's James Rampton told the BBC.

"There's a tendency in our culture to be very homogeneous, everyone must be cool, be good looking. But Monkman, I hope he wouldn't mind me saying, is a bit of a geek."

  4. 'Flames from first floor flat'published at 10:47 British Summer Time 10 April 2017

However, one eyewitness called Magda told me she could see "flames from the first floor" when it was at its peak.

Eight fire crews spent about two hours at George Lambton Avenue - the picture with the missing brick shows where fire fighters were able to pierce the exterior of the building with their Cobra equipment, which shoots a fine spray at the fire.

Some 23 people, including seven children, got out of the building safely, and no-one was injured.
