    RAF Upwood

Owners have been trying to get permission to build housing on the site since the late '80s, but concerns over traffic and drainage have blocked changes.

In the meantime, vandals have been using the abandoned site as a playground.

The owners of the base say they're relieved Huntingdonshire District Council has accepted "housing must go somewhere".

After six failed applications, the site has been included in the area's Local Development Plan.

Station commander Scott Feveyear said the damage to the house was "considerable".

"Crews made several attempts to cut away the thatch to make a fire break but the fire spread rapidly," he said.

"The roof has collapsed into the first floor and the house is structurally unstable. Crews managed to recover a lot of property from inside the house to prevent it from being damaged too, but the house has sadly been lost."

The neighbours, who alerted the couple who live in the property to the fire, have been thanked by the service for their "generosity and support".

"They stayed up throughout the night to supply us with a constant stream of tea, snacks and even breakfast.

"This was hugely appreciated by us all and we cannot thank them enough."

No-one was injured in the fire. The road remains closed while the building is made structurally safe.

  17. House for homeless opens after members club togetherpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

    Dotty McLeod
    BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

Three homeless people are now living in a house in Cambridge bought by 17 people who clubbed together to pay for it.

Members of City Church Cambridge put in between £10,000 and £60,000 each to meet the £300,000 cost.

The first residents have now been living there for about a fortnight.

The last count by the Department for Communities and Local Government stated that 40 people were sleeping rough on the streets of Cambridge nightly; a record number, and almost double the Peterborough figure.

Ed Walker, from charity Hope Into Action which is helping to run the house-buying programme, said decisions on who moves in are made after an assessment.

"We make a decision based on where they're at, whether they want to move in to the house, are they really at a point where they feel they can change," he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"Between us and them, we help them to tackle the issues that are keeping them in poverty and help them to move on.

"Our aim is to give people an environment where they can believe in themselves again. A place where they can look to make positive life choices."

When archaeologists uncovered a series of wooden houses at a quarry in Whittlesey last year, it was described as Britain's Pompeii.

The buildings at Must Farm date back to about 1,000BC - 3,000 years ago.

The dig revealed the most well-preserved Bronze Age settlement ever found in the UK, including remains of circular houses that were raised on stilts above the river, clothing, pots, furniture and food among other things.

Now the story of the amazing discovery has gone on show at Peterborough Museum.
