    Rather cloudy but staying mainly dry this evening across the BBC East region with some mist patches.

    Thicker cloud will bring patchy rain later tonight and mild air in, so although temperatures may drop to 7C (45F) they are expected to rise later in the night.

    Saturday will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, becoming a little drier and brighter before more rain moves in. Rain then turning more heavy and persistent, clearing slowly eastwards.

    It'll peak at 13C (55F), but be noticeably colder by the evening.

  2. Homeless charity sends ivory donations to be destroyedpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2017

    A donation of elephant ivory objects received by homeless charity Emmaus, external is to be destroyed.

    The social enterprise, which provides a home and work for up to 34 formerly homeless people, relies on donations of furniture and other objects for it to sell or repurpose.

    Last month, its warehouse just north of Cambridge received two parasols and a bottle stop (below), which turned out to be made from ivory.

    They will now be destroyed as part of an International Fund for Animal Welfare campaign to end the market in elephant ivory, external goods.

    The campaign's director Philip Mansbridge said: "We are really grateful to the staff of Emmaus Cambridge, another great cause, for getting involved in our campaign."

    The campaign wants ivory objects "to be put beyond use, so that it will not resurface on the market or help fuel further illegal poaching of elephants to meet consumer demand".

    More investment is needed in Lincolnshire's roads, according to transport minister John Hayes.

    Mr Hayes, who is also MP for South Holland and The Deepings, has been speaking at Lincolnshire's first ever Road Safety Summit.

    He said that historically governments haven't been bold enough in making infrastructure investments, but he said he will campaign for more investment in in-road investment in Lincolnshire.

    Improvements often take too long to achieve, and there is more that can be done, he added.

    Mr Hayes praised recent work on the A17 around Peppermint Junction, which "has been long called for and taken a long time to do", but he said more can be done on the A16.

    Specifically, he said there should be better links between Spalding and Peterborough where people access the A1.

  4. 'Final' firework display set to go out with a bangpublished at 16:25 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2017

    A Cambridgeshire firework display, which has been running for more than 50 years, could be held for the final time.

    The organising team for Fireworks in Hemingford, external, say unless they can find a new home and new committee members, tomorrow could be its last display.

    They say they don't want to the "event to die" and are in need of more help.

    The show and bonfire will take place in the Big Field, off London Road, St Ives on Saturday from 17:00.

  5. 'Busway' could be built on old Haverhill railway linepublished at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2017

    It seems Improvements to transport routes between Cambridge and Haverhill are still years away...

    The Greater Cambridge Partnership met yesterday to discuss the work, and say the earliest it could start would be 2019.

    The group is putting three options out of consultation that include:

    • A new off-road busway from the A11 via Sawston to the Cambrige Biomediccal Campus (CBC), partly along the old Haverhill railway line
    • On-road bus lanes from Babraham Research Campus, leading to an off-road busway from the Babraham Road park & ride site to CBC

    Chris Tunstall, from the Greater Cambridge Partnership, says they have about £140m to spend on improvements, so they are "looking to prioritise the improvements".

    He explained that calls re-establish a rail service between Haverhill and Cambridge is not an option for them as they "can't pay for a railway line" which is estimated to cost £650m.

    Praise has been heaped on a Cambridgeshire teenager, for rescuing a woman who jumped into the River Nene, as reported in the Fenland Citizen, external.

    Abbie Bannon, 15, from March, leapt into the river after seeing a friend in trouble in the water during the half-term holiday.

    She says "I didn't think about it, I just went in".

    Stephanie Larham, one of her teachers at her school in Wisbech, says she's "super proud of Abbie and are grateful that Abbie and the other girl are safe".

    There are major disruptions to train services through Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire after damage to overhead wires at Welwyn North.

    Great Northern, external railways recommends that passengers "use alternative routes or not travel unless necessary".

    The damage has been repaired, and all lines between Stevenage and London Kings Cross and Moorgate have reopened, but there are still delays of up to 60 minutes, cancellations and revised services.

    Rail replacement buses are supplementing the rail service between Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City calling at Knebworth and Welwyn North, in both directions.

    A Peterborough boxing club is continuing the search for a new home after its gym was burnt down in a suspected arson attack.

    Fire crews were called to Top Yard School of Boxing, in New England, at about 06:00 on Monday.

    The large cabin, used to train teenagers, is now unsafe to use.

    Shujah Saklain, a coach at the club, said: "We are going to move forward, we are going to build another club and fingers crossed we are going to get bigger, better and stronger".
