The German shepherd-Rottweiler cross had managed to get stuck in a deep muddy ditch in Coldham near Wisbech on Friday.

Two crews used a long ladder to rescue him, after Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service was called by his distraught owner.

"The owner heard his dog whimpering in the dyke and tried getting him out himself. The dog got further up the dyke, but became very tired," a spokesman said.

They had to wrap the cold, muddy dog in blankets before he was taken to be checked over by a vet.

"The owner of the dog did the right thing by getting in touch with the fire service," the spokesman added.

"We always encourage dog owners to contact us to avoid putting themselves at risk."

  4. MPs meets minister to discuss Mildenhall Fiveways roundaboutpublished at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2017

The installation of traffic lights on the Fiveways roundabout at Barton Mills will be discussed by the West Suffolk MP, and the roads minister Jesse Norman at a meeting this evening.

    Fiveways roundabout

Earlier this year, the government announced work on the £400,000 scheme would start in Autumn 2018 and should be complete by the following spring.

It followed a long campaign by local residents and motorists who had complained about frequent accidents on the roundabout and congestion at peak times.

Matt Hancock said: "Fiveways is notorious to the thousands of people who use the roundabout every day - it is dangerous, confusing, and very often congested and gridlocked."

We'll report back on the meeting tomorrow.

South East Cambridgeshire MP Lucy Frazer, Conservative, will also be at the meeting, where the A14/A142 junction at Newmarket, and the A1307, between Cambridge and Haverhill, will also be on the agenda.

A "community fridge" is opening in Peterborough today to tackle food waste and help local people.

The centre at WestRaven Community Cafe, external will take excess food that would have gone to waste - from farms, cafes and supermarkets - and redistribute it to those most in need.

It's been set up by the Peterborough Environment City Trust, external who say food worth over £3bn is wasted across the country each year.

They hope the community fridge will ease pressure on residents who are struggling to afford to feed themselves and their families.
