    A number of "awesome" face masks have been made to protect the "fantastic" volunteers out collecting prescriptions and delivering food parcels to the most vulnerable.

    Luton Volunteering, external said the colourful and unique masks had been made by Islea.

  4. Online safety advice from fire and police expertspublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    Online safety advice aimed at children and young people is being offered by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, external alongside the county's police, external force as education officers cannot visit schools during the coronavirus pandemic.

    Education officer Neil Soanes said he would normally be discussing road safety and the equipment used in collisions as well as using a quiz to show when youngsters need to be extra vigilant.

  5. Radio station 'overwhelmed' with listener donationspublished at 17:43 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    A radio station has said it has been "overwhelmed" with donations to help vulnerable people in a town.

    Listeners to Luton Urban Radio , externalhave sent in 40 bags of clothes and 20 boxes of non-perishable food, toiletries and cleaning products.

    It said: "On behalf of all the DJs and presenters, we want to thank all the community who have donated to our initiative – and to those who need it the most."

    The items are being distributed to Mary Seacole Housing Association , externaland homeless charities across Luton.

    A new way to help businesses struggling during the coronavirus pandemic has been set up.

    The Greater Cambridge Business Forum, aims to explore the concerns of local firms and find out the best way to help them.

    It has been started by South Cambridgeshire District , externaland Cambridge City, external councils.

    Bridget Smith, leader of South Cambs, said: "We will continue to work with local and national government and the very accomplished business networks in our area to get our business communities through these very difficult times.

    "If we all pull together, Greater Cambridge will recover well and quickly.”

    Lewis Herbert, City Council leader, said: "Getting the Cambridge area economy safely out of lockdown and on to strong foundations for the new normal is the biggest economic and social recovery challenge we have had to face in our lifetimes."

    A petrol station in Hemel Hempstead has been photogaphed showing petrol prices have gone under £1 for a litre for the first time since 2016.

    The Tesco Extra shows unleaded petrol at 99.9p a litre.

    The news comes as Morrisons announced it had reduced its petrol prices to a maximum of 99.7p per litre at it forecourts.

    The supermarket said this is the first time the fuel has been "sold nationally" for less than £1 per litre since February 2016.

    Department for Transport figures released last week showed that road traffic was around 58% lower than in early February.

    Essential food, medicine and personal protective equipment (PPE) deliveries are being made in Suffolk using passenger transport vehicles now underused because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    The county council, external has mustered its community transport, taxis and subsidised minibus services to help distribute food to the county’s 11,000 shielding residents and deliver medicine to people who are unable to collect it themselves.

    Planning is also under way to ferry renal patients to Ipswich and West Suffolk hospitals.

    PPE is being delivered to key workers in the health and care sectors.

    Where key workers can no longer use normal public transport, Suffolk County Council is co-ordinating with its partners to provide safe alternatives.

    Andrew Reid, cabinet member at the council, said: In these uncertain times, it has never been more important for us to all join forces and work together to keep our county moving and support our residents, especially those who are most vulnerable."

  9. Fish and chip shop overwhelmed by orders for deliveriespublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    The co-owner of a popular Norwich city centre fish and chip shop, which had to close due to the coronavirus lockdown, has said he has been inundated since re-opening for deliveries yesterday.

    By mid-afternoon on Monday, the Grosvenor Fish Bar on Pottergate had taken 400 orders in about five hours, and had to stop taking any more.

    Duane Dibartolomeo (pictured below), co-owner, said: "After six weeks of being bored - well, we steam-cleaned the place and things like that - it's been an amazing few days.

    "It was a lot of fun getting back into it. Athough with doing deliveries for the first time it has been a steep learning curve.

    "We had to stop at 16:00 because we'd had so many people ordering food."

  10. Closed care homes to re-openpublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    Two care homes that closed are temporarily re-opening to look after patients who have been discharged from hospital, but are not ready to go home and look after themselves.

    Hertfordshire County Council said The Fairways in Watford is now open and it will be joined by Nevetts in Buntingford in June.

    They will each have 40 beds and be staffed by redeployed or returning council employees and new recruits.

    Richard Roberts, cabinet member for adult care and health, said: "To get the homes ready for use in such a short space of time, at such an excellent standard is a credit to the team involved."

  11. Faith group continues to feed key workerspublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    Since 2 April a faith group has been making thousands of meals for NHS staff, key workers and care homes.

    The Sri Guru Ravidass Sabha in Bedford, promised to make the meals for as long as the coronavirus pandemic remains and it has stayed true to its word.

    Yesterday was its 40th day of food service, and to mark the event, it received a thank you letter from the Labour MP for Bedford and Kempston, Mohammad Yasin.

    The Campaign for Real Ale, external, which is based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, has launched a new app to help people buy local beer and cider from pubs, breweries and cider producers during the Covid-19 lockdown.

    The Brew2You app, external will help thousands of local businesses currently offering drinks through takeaway or delivery services.

    Customers can easily search for their favourite drink within their local area and order it to their door.

    More than 300 pubs and breweries are listed on the app, which has been produced as part of CAMRA’s Pulling Together campaign, external to support the industry during lockdown.

    Nik Antona, CAMRA’s national chairman, said: "With the nation’s pubs closed for the foreseeable future, it is imperative that we do whatever we can to support these local businesses."

  13. Bygone times in nursingpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    A glimpse back at bygone times has been revealed by a museum in Norfolk - a fitting tribute on International Nurses' Day.

    Norwich Castle has tweeted photos of a uniform worn on the wards at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in the early 1900s.

    Its then-owner Alice Ottaway joined the procession at the funeral of Edith Cavell - the British nurse who worked with prisoners of war in World War One and was executed by the Germans.

  14. High rate of Covid-19 infections in west Norfolkpublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    West Norfolk has seen the highest rate of Covid-19 infections in the East of England with 420 cases per 100,000 of the population.

    The figures are for the King's Lynn (pictured) and West Norfolk Council area which has had 638 people infected, according to statistics released by the government.

    The whole of Norfolk has had 1,913 cases of people being infected. The rate of infection is 211 across the county is 100,000 of population.

    Coronavirus

    It compares to Norwich where there were 143 infections per 100,000 of the population.

    In the East of England the second highest is Hertsmere where there were 359 infection per 100,000 of population.

    On International Nurses Day, we're hearing stories of amazing nurses from across the country.

    One such nurse is Nichola, who works at Ipswich Hospital.

    After leaving a career in banking to re-train, she lost her mother a year into her course.

    “Losing my Mum has been devastating," Nichola said, "but it’s made me realise you nurse the patient, but you also nurse the patient’s family too.

    "I know my mum would be proud I carried on with my course and am now doing what I always wanted to do when I left school.”

  16. Crisp factory deep cleaned after staff fall illpublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    Crisp manufacturer Tayto has reported six confirmed cases of Covid-19 among members of staff at its factory in Corby.

    As first reported by the Northamptonshire Telegraph, external, the Princewood Road site was closed over the bank holiday weekend for deep cleaning.

    A spokesman for the Northern Ireland-based Tayto Group said: "All symptomatic employees have self-isolated and will not return to work until it is appropriate for them to do so."

    The company added that social distancing "safeguards" have been in place at the site since March. It resumed production on Sunday night.

  17. Arrests follow warnings about home delivery scampublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    As people have ordered more and more online during lockdown, police issued a warning against a home-delivery scam... and now three people have been arrested in Hertfordshire.

    Police said two men and a woman from south London, have been arrested in connection with nine fraud offences, where people received items like smart phones and laptops that they had not ordered.

    A short while later a courier arrived to collect the packages, claiming they had been delivered to the wrong address.

    One arrest was made in Stevenage, after a resident was alerted to the scam after reading about the police warning.

    Officers believe such scams involved purchases being made using stolen bank cards, but the crooks use someone else's address for delivery to try to avoid detection.

    They then ring the addressee and claim to be from the delivery company, say the company's made a mistake and go round to collect the goods.

    The three suspects have been released under investigation.

  19. 13 tonnes of PPE lands at Luton Airportpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    Whilst passenger numbers have dramatically dropped at airports due to lockdown, 300 cargo flights have landed at London Luton Airport in six weeks, bringing in 3,500 tonnes of supplies and goods.

    Thirteen tonnes of personal protective equipment landed on Monday, destined for the NHS.
