    Railway company Greater Anglia, external is to change its reduced emergency timetable and increase train services after the government announced a slight easing of the lockdown.

    From Monday, it will run an amended timetable on weekdays with a "Saturday service" number of trains.

    It will see increased frequency of services on the Great Eastern Main Line from Colchester, Clacton and Southend to London and the West Anglia Main Line from Cambridge to Liverpool Street.

    Regional lines will remain as they are, but the hourly Norwich to Cambridge service will now run as a direct through service to Stansted Airport again.

    The Norwich-London intercity service, will continue to run once an hour, but during peak periods will not call at Colchester or Chelmsford as it runs non-stop between Manningtree and Stratford.

    Passengers at Colchester will be served by three trains per hour and at Chelmsford by four trains per hour on the Great Eastern Main Line.

    Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director, said: "Government advice is still to avoid public transport, so please only travel with us if your journey is absolutely essential.

    "We have marked up our trains and stations to help customers to socially distance."

    A temporary testing centre for key workers is operating in Bedfordshire.

    The Army is running the site at Cedars Upper School in Leighton Buzzard, until 17:00.

    It is only for key workers displaying symptoms of Covid-19 and it is also open tomorrow.

    Most people's lives changed on 23 March, when we were placed in lockdown, so to find out how we have coped or changed our habits, volunteers are needed to take part in a study.

    The University of Cambridge wants to know if staying at home has led to us drinking more, spending more time gambling online or consuming pornography.

    The anonymous online survey, external takes 10 minutes to complete, researchers said.

    Dr Valerie Voon, from the university, said: "In many cases, these changes will be people’s strategies for coping with the anxiety and stress caused by the pandemic and lockdown and, we hope, won't have a long-term impact if the behaviour can be controlled.

    "For some people who might already have been struggling with or have a history of addiction these increased habits could prove problematic."

    A popular amusement park is to re-open its car parks from tomorrow to allow walkers to visit.

    Wicksteed Park, external, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, said the car park will be open from sunrise to sunset.

    However, all attractions, food and drink outlets, and toilets will remain closed.

    It is asking everyone to observe social distancing and to keep dogs on leads.

  10. Expert backs facemasks where distancing is difficultpublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    An expert in infectious diseases has backed government guidelines that facemasks should be worn on public transport and in shops, when social distancing is not always possible, to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

    Prof Paul Hunter, from the University of East Anglia, said the evidence was still "quite murky", but safety should come first.

    Prof Hunter was concerned people wearing facemasks might stop thinking about social distancing and that could make matters worse.

    "But if people stick to the rules on those occasions when they can't avoid being out in public and wear them [facemasks] then that is certainly appropriate," he said.

    Garden waste collections are beginning again, with Braintree District Council, external being the latest to say they will resume.

    They will be on a four-weekly cycle.

    Postcards will be sent to residents to let them know when their first collection date will be.

    Collections of grey bins, black sacks, food bins and recycling sacks are still the same.

    Unlike many other local authorities, Braintree collects garden waste for no extra charge on top of the council tax, external, although there is an additional fee if you want a second bin.

  12. Construction to begin again on new homespublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    A home builder is to start a phased re-opening of a number of construction sites in the East of England.

    Barratt Developments, external said 31 sites in the region from the Barratt and David Wilson Homes brand will be re-opened.

    The company is not re-opening its sales centres or show homes yet.

    Andrew Swindell, regional managing director of the company, said: "We have created a detailed set of working practices and protocols for employees and sub-contractors to ensure that we can re-open our construction sites safely in a phased and measured way which minimises risk."

    Sites where customers have already exchanged or reserved will resume first, he added.

    Norwich City Football Club is to begin refunding season ticket holders and people who've bought tickets for individual matches.

    The club said about 36,000 supporters would be affected, external.

    The season has been postponed, and if it does resume, matches will be behind closed doors, so no fans would be able to watch.

    Today is International Nurses Day, to mark the contribution nurses make to society.

    Leanne Franklin has worked for Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, external for 14 years and she said she had "never been more proud than I am today".

    She said she loved her job as she can make difference to people's lives by "supporting them in their darkest hours".

    "No day or shift is ever the same, and I love that," she said.

    The government's latest statistics on coronavirus deaths, external showed the lowest daily rise for more than a month.

    Monday's figures showed the number of hospital deaths in the East of England increased by 16:

    • Basildon and Thurrock Hospitals: 2
    • Buckinghamshire Heathcare: 2
    • Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals: 2
    • Milton Keynes University Hospital: 1
    • Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital: 1
    • Norfolk Community: 1
    • Peterborough and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals: 1
    • Northampton General Hospital: 2
    • The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn: 2
    • West Herts Hospitals: 2

    The biggest daily rise so far was 134 deaths in the figures released on 8 April.

    The current total in the region stands at 3,110.

    The number of UK deaths is 32,065.

    A new online booking system is going live as another county reopens its recycling centres.

    It's an attempt to avoid the lengthy traffic queues that formed as other counties reopened their gates... as well as to try to ensure the safety of householders and staff.

    Suffolk County Council is opening its sites on Thursday and its appointment system opens online, external at 15:00 today.

    A spokesman said: "If you do not have an appointment, you will be denied access and turned away from the site."

    There will also be a set of new temporary rules:

    • No access to site without pre-booking
    • Cars and pedestrians only - no vans, trailers or commercial-type vehicles
    • One adult to unload, unless 2 adults needed for heavy items
    • No staff assistance to unload vehicles
    • No chargeable waste accepted (soil, rubble, hardcore or plasterboard)
    • No trade waste
    • No textiles or re-use items accepted
