    Southend Pier, external has reopened but for walking only and due to current government social distancing the trains will not be running.

    Visitors can still stride out along the 1.3 mile (2km) walk to the end of the pier and the same distance to return.

    Takeaway services will be open every day offering drinks, snacks, ice cream and fish and chips.

    Anglers will also be welcomed back, but only at the end of the pier.

    Coping stones from a wall surrounding an historic abbey and estate were stolen on Thursday night.

    The land agent for Walsingham Estates, external John Downing is very angry as this is the second time it has happened.

    This time thieves have taken about 175 of the shaped bricks that stand on top of the flint wall surrounding Walsingham Abbey in Norfolk, which is a place of pilgrimage for Christians.

    "It’s a nice greeting to visitors to Walsingham just as we ease lockdown," he said in a social media post.

    "Do you know anyone building or topping a flint wall anywhere nearby?

    "Please report to police if you find or are offered reclaimed coping bricks - about 175 stolen from Walsingham Estate.

    "We’ve had some stolen in the past and they were found at a reclaim centre.

    "It ended up costing him a lot of money because he was unaware they were stolen."

    The number of people who have died in hospital from coronavirus in the East of England has risen by two, according to the latest daily government figures, external.

    The deaths, according to the latest statistics published on Monday, were at the following NHS trusts:

    • Basildon Hospital: 1
    • Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation: 1

    The total number of deaths for the eastern region's hospitals passed 4,000 at the end of last week and now stands at 4,019.

    The latest Department of Health, external figures show that across the UK the number of deaths stands at 44,236, according to statistics issued on Sunday.

    Charities, schools, sports clubs and community groups in Northampton are invited to apply for funding of up to £1,000 each to support efforts in improving or protecting their local environment.

    The EnviroGrant scheme is being launched by Northampton Borough Council and Veolia to support a variety of new and existing projects and activities.

    Examples could include equipment, materials and promotion needed for community litter picks, the improvement or development of green spaces, community food growing, composting schemes or swapping events.

    Mike Hallam, cabinet member for environment, said: "We are fortunate to have a lot of fantastic charities and community groups who are passionate about protecting and improving Northampton’s environment and the EnviroGrant scheme will help to provide vital support to these not-for-profit groups, to help them get a project off the ground, develop it further or make it more sustainable."

    Police are keeping an open mind after they were called about a young girl being put into the front of a van in the town of March in Cambridgeshire.

    A member of the public reported seeing an incident on Sunday evening in Cavalry Drive.

    A 999 call suggested a girl, about five years old, was put into the front of a van at about 19:00 and a child's pink bicycle had been left in the street.

    Police issued a tweet saying there was nothing to suggest anything criminal had taken place but they were aware of reports on social media and were continuing inquiries.
