    The company seeking to build a new nuclear power station at Sizewell, EDF SZC Co, external, has submitted applications to the Environment Agency for three permits needed for environmental protection during commissioning, operation and decommissioning of the plant.

    The permits cover disposals and discharges of radioactive wastes, operation of standby power supply systems using diesel generators and discharges of cooling water and liquid effluent into the North Sea.

    The Environment Agency is seeking feedback, external from local people on the permits during the consultation period which will run from 6 July 2020 for 12 weeks.

    If the agency grants permits conditions to ensure proper protection of people and the environment can be included.

    The agency’s nuclear new build project manager, Simon Barlow, said: "These applications represent the culmination of 10 years of pre-application discussions with EDF SZC Co.

    "We welcome people’s views on these permit applications and will carefully consider their comments before we progress to the next stage of our decision making process.”

    The chief executive of a theatre that has had to cancel its Christmas panto because of a shortage of cash resulting from the Covid-19 lockdown is delighted the government is going to give the performing arts £1.5bn.

    But Stephen Crocker, from the Theatre Royal Norwich, external, is concerned about future reopening dates.

    "Whilst I hugely welcome this announcement we are still waiting on the details of reopening times for venues and for a lot of us the two things go hand in hand," he said.

    "This is absolutely amazing because it's going to give us, you know, a reprieve.

    "But actually for most of us what we want to do is to get back to what we usually do."

    The first weekend of pub reopenings after the coronavirus lockdown restrictions were eased was busy for the East of England Ambulance Service, external with its crews dealing with an increase in calls.

    Demand doubled at times between 21:00 on Saturday and 04:00 on Sunday compared with the previous four weeks.

    Marcus Bailey, chief operating officer, said: "Thankfully the alcohol-related calls that we could have expected weren't as high as the small increase in calls for assaults but it was still a very busy night."

    The number of people who have died in hospital from coronavirus in the East of England has risen by two, according to the latest daily government figures, external.

    The deaths, according to the latest statistics published on Sunday, were at the following NHS trusts:

    • Bedford Hospital: 1
    • Kettering General Hospital: 1

    The total number of deaths for the eastern region's hospital passed 4,000 at the end of last week and now stands at 4,017.

    The latest Ministry of Health, external figures show that across the UK the number of deaths increased by 22 and stands at 44,220.
