The future of the Godiva Festival hangs in the balance as the city council says it needs to look at new funding to keep it going.

Organiser Lee House told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Bob Brolly she hopes the festival will be back for next year.

She said: "I've never known year on year whether it's going to happen, I'll have to wait until next year to find out."

She went on to say although most people would be willing to pay "the unique selling point of the festival is that we're free and it would be very difficult to change after 17 years."

This year is the 17th Godiva Festival organised by Coventry City Council as a free family event.

It was cancelled in 2012 because of boggy conditions at a cost of almost £450,000 to the council.

The council estimates it generates £1.8m into the local economy through festival weekend.

  20. Future of festival in doubtpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 4 July 2015

    BBC Coventry & Warwickshire

This is likely to be the last Godiva Festival funded entirely by the city council.

Councillor Kevin Maton, in charge of Coventry's events, says there will have to be a change because there isn't the level of council investment needed to maintain it.

He also says the council has to look at its funding of other events across the city as it bids for City of Culture 2021.

Back in February, the council approved plans to make £15m of cutbacks.
