  1. West Midlands Police to cut PSCO jobspublished at 14:00

    The number of police community support officers in the West Midlands is to be cut, external by about 80% over the next five years.

    Currently there are about 535 so-called PCSOs in the region, but that will drop to 119 by 2020.

    Deputy Chief Constable David Thompson says “how services look and are delivered will have to change".

  4. Project tackling child abuse awarded funding in Coventrypublished at 13:02

    A Coventry project that promotes child safeguarding amoung Black faith organisations is to benefit from new National Lottery funding.

    Africans Unite against Child Abuse has been given the award for its work to reduce abuse linked to religious practices, by offering training sessions and support forums.

    Other organisations to benefit are the Nuneaton and Bedworth Healthy Living Network and a Coventry boxing academy helping to tackle anti-social behaviour.

    Felix the cat, from Bedworth, is recovering at home after surgery to remove a cat food tin from his head.

    The former stray got himself stuck when scavenging a recycling bin in a neighbour's garden.

    Debbie Evans, from Coventry veterinary charity PDSA, says he was seriously stressed when they saw him but a short operation with a general anaesthetic succesfully removed the tin.

    Felix only suffered a slight cut to the ear.

    The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner has criticised the government's decision to delay proposed changes to police budgets.

    Police minister Mike Penning says the delay is due to a "statistical error" in how they calculate funding.

    West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson called the decision, external "farcical" and said: "It is quite frankly shocking that the Home Office have made a mistake like this."
