    After a £5m investment by Coventry City Council, the new Edgewick Primary school has been officially opened.

    The school building has doubled in size and now has a capacity of 420 pupils, plus a nursery.

  5. Council rejects smoke-free zone outside hospitalpublished at 13:17

    Proposals that would have turned a Coventry street into a smoke-free zone have been rejected by the city council, despite a 300-name petition in favour.

    Residents in Hall Lane, near the University Hospital, called on the authority to stop staff and visitors lighting up outside their front doors after the hospital introduced a no-smoking policy on its grounds.

    The council said introducing a Public Space Protection Order to prevent smoking in the street was not practical.

    In a statement, the hospital say they "have no formal powers over what happens past our boundary" but are working to see how they can "tackle the problem".

    Staff at Brantano shops in Central Six in Coventry and Hatton Village near Warwick face an uncertain future today - after news that the discount shoe retailer's gone into administration.

    Administrators from PwC are now running the Leicestershire-based business, which they said would trade normally while they sought a buyer.

    Plans have been submitted for the regeneration of an area of Coventry city centre around Hales Street adjoining the River Sherbourne.

    Plans include opening up the river in Palmer Lane as well as the creation of restaurants and cafes which will front onto a new square.

  13. Fans queue for Jimmy Hill celebration service ticketspublished at 10:46

    A queue is building to get tickets for a service honouring football pioneer Jimmy Hill.

    William Gowlett, 80, from Coventry, will attend with his son.

    "Jimmy Hill was everything to Coventry City, without a doubt people wouldn't have heard of us if he hadn't come," he said.

    "I'll always remember going on the Sky Blue Special to Everton playing bingo - that was something he started, and they're big things for a lot of people.

    "When we played Wolves and got promoted it was one of our biggest days."

  16. Fans queue for Jimmy Hill celebration ticketspublished at 09:35

    Tickets for the Jimmy Hill celebration are available from the Butts Park Arena ticket office from 10:00 this morning.

    Rob Hammond, a Coventry fan for more than 50 years, was first in the queue for tickets, and said he was “very pleased” to book his seat at the memorial for the Sky Blues’ former manager.

    He brought the club back from the bootstraps and made them into the household name,” he said.

    “I’ve lived through the dark days, then Jimmy Hill came along and revolutionised Coventry.”
