    Rugby councillors will consider rehousing up to ten refugee families, external from Syria at a meeting today.

    The families would be Rugby’s contribution to the 20,000 Syrian refugees Prime Minister David Cameron promised to receive last autumn.

  2. Coventry firefighter to collect OBE for humanitarian workpublished at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2016

    A Coventry firefighter is off to Buckingham Palace today to collect his OBE for his services to national and international search and rescue.

    Mr Moore responded to Hurricane Rita in the US, and earthquakes in Turkey, Indonesia, Haiti, New Zealand, Japan and Nepal. Last year he coordinated the UK response to flooding in Bosnia.

    Mr Moore said he was “humbled and honoured” to have been awarded.

  6. Men in Edgwick Park 'offering young people drugs as gateway to sex'published at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2016

    Men attempting to engage young females in sexual activity has been highlighted by a police report into Child Sexual Exploitation at Edgwick Park , externalin Coventry.

    It says "intelligence" indicates young people are coming to the park to access alcohol and drugs provided by older males.

    The report adds: "The men are then engaging in / attempting to engage in sexual activity with these young people whilst in the park or taking them to other locations within Coventry."

    Two young girls said they were raped in June last year after meeting men in the park, which led to a police inquiry.

  7. Warnings of sexual exploitation in a Coventry parkpublished at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2016

    Fears over the sexual exploitation of children in a Coventry park have led the council to apply for a protection order to curb anti-social bahaviour. 

    In a joint report, police and council officials say children are being put at risk by behaviour in Edgwick Park i, externaln the Foleshill area of the city.

    Residents have expressed concerns over drug-taking, excessive alcohol and groups of men hanging around, with a local school also reporting incidents. 

    The report states: "Edgwick Park has been identified as a location within the city wherein activity linked to child sexual exploitation is taking place."

     A new portrait of William Shakespeare, completed after the artist's friend stood in as a body double, will go on show to the public from 20 April.  

    Artist Geoff Tristram noticed his friend Simon Millichip bore something of a resemblance to the Bard so asked him to act as stand-in.

    Mr Millichip went to the Shakespeare birthplace, in Stratford-upon-Avon, dressed in costume and then posed for photos. 

    The images form the basis for the portrait, commissioned by councils in Stratford to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, in April.

    A radar survey into William Shakespeare's grave and an excavation of the playwright's house are among research projects marking the 400th anniversary of his death.

    Shakespeare's grave in Holy Trinity Church in Stratford upon Avon has never been excavated, but a scan has been carried out to search below ground.

    There are believed to have been discoveries in the grave, in a church where five members of the Shakespeare family are buried.  

    The findings are expected to be revealed in the next few weeks.

    Parents across Coventry and Warwickshire will find out which secondary school their children will attend today.

    It comes as councils are warning that it could soon be impossible to meet their legal duty to ensure every child has a place in secondary school. 

    The Local Government Association says an extra half a million places will be needed by 2024. The Government said that was "scaremongering".

    Parents are being consulted on plans to merge two single-sex schools in Coventry to form a new co-educational academy.

    A letter has been sent to parents outlining plans to move pupils from the Woodlands Academy on Broad Lane to neighbouring Tile Hill Wood School for girls, creating a new West Coventry Academy.
