    A statue of William Shakespeare crafted by a world-renowned sculptor has yet to find a permanent home - after highways chiefs claimed it could distract motorists passing through Stratford-upon-Avon.

    The proposed location - a roundabout - was described as "unsuitable on grounds of highway safety”.

    So now it resides in a yard in the Warwickshire countryside, with an uncertain future.

  4. One arrested after attempted robbery in Bedworthpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    A man's been arrested after theatening staff at Barclays Bank, external in All Saints Square in Bedworth this afternoon. 

    Police say they were called to the bank after reports a man was threatening staff with what looked like hand grenades.

    No one was injured in the incident, and the town centre remains cordoned-off whilst they carry out their investigation.

    Two devices, believed to be deactivated smoke grenades have been recovered.

    Safety checks of the line are being made between Rugby and Milton Keynes Central, external. This is causing delays of up to 25 minutes to trains between these stations, Network Rail says.

    David Cameron says it's the wrong thing to do to for junior doctors to strike, and particularly to "go ahead with the withdrawal of emergency care - that is not right" he said.

    Labour PCC candidate, Julie Jackson, says the problem of "visible policing" needs to be addressed.

    "What we need" she said "is higher profile safer neighbourhood teams - since 2010 over 160 officers and PCSOs have left the force - we need to redress that".

    Philip Seccombe, for the Conservatives, said the way to increase police visibility is to "strengthen the volunteer ethos, let's give the PCSOs more powers and let's increase intelligence to find out where the problems are".

    Independent candidate Ben Twomey says he wants to concentrate on prevention of crime rather than increasing officers. 

    "One way is strengthening youth groups and organisations, making sure there's something productive for young people to do as well as tackling drug and alcohol problems at the earliest opportunity".

  10. Man jailed for Coventry pub shooting 20 years agopublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    A tattoo artist who shot a DJ in the face after being asked to leave a pub 20 years ago has been jailed for three years,

    Anthony Stephens, who police said was a member of biker gang The Outlaws, fired the bullet, which became lodged in his victim's brain, at The Plough on London Road, Coventry, on the morning of Sunday, 20 October 1996.

    Stephens fled to Ireland after the shooting, police said. He was arrested when he came back to the UK on 22 November 2013 and landed at Birmingham Airport.

    The 49-year-old, formerly of Cranberry Road, Tile Cross, Birmingham, was cleared of attempted murder and wounding with intent but found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm yesterday.

  12. PCC Elections: Candidates vow to deal with Warwickshire's shrinking budgetspublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    Lib Dem candidate Nicola Davies says one of the big challenges will be working with shrinking budgets. 

    "I'd like to see us giving our police community support officers more powers so that when they’re out and about they can be more effective, which would free up the time of police officers to be dealing with other issues", she said.

    UKIP's Rob Harris said he wants people to understand why there has had to be budget cuts.

    "People need to know why there are cuts, and people need to be more involved. With the cuts, year in and year out we have to take more responsibility to inform the public. 

    David Woodhouse, an independent, said he thinks there is room in the current budget to invest in local policing.

    "Some of that would be recruitment of special constables but I would put some local officers back on the beat", he said.

    The head of the British Medical Association, and consultant at Coventry's University Hospital, Dr Mark Porter has defended today's walk out by junior doctors saying it would have called off the strike if Mr Hunt agreed to lift his threat to impose the contract.

  14. Five charged after dead sheep found in van on the M6published at 16:18 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    Six slaughtered sheep have been found in the boot of a vehicle on the M6.

    Police said they stopped the vehicle on Sunday as it was travelling between junctions one and two, near to Harborough Magna.

    Five men are due to appear at Warwickshire Magistrates' Court, external charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, theft and criminal damage.

    At 22, Independent candidate Ben Twomey, external is the youngest candidate for Warwickshire PCC.

    Ben's worked for two police and crime commissioners including the current Warwickshire PCC Ron Ball.

    He says he wants to speak for and represent 18-24 year olds who, he says, are an age group he'd like to engage.

    Police tweet they've resolved a firearms incident in Bedworth.

    Staff at the Civic Hall confirm they were evacuated around 13:30 this afternoon after police cordoned off the town centre.
