  2. Local politicians pay tribute to Jo Cox MPpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

    Politicians from across Coventry and Warwickshire have been paying tribute to the Yorkshire MP, Jo Cox, who died yesterday after being attacked in her constituency.     

    Leader of Coventry City Council, George Duggins, said the incident "strikes at the heart of democracy".

    "I don't know how to articulate my feelings" he said, "it's just a huge sense of sadness".

    "I think the only word that springs to mind is 'futility'." 

    Nadhim Zahawi, MP for Stratford, tweeted his reaction to the death:

  3. Barbecue thrown at train caused massive rail delayspublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

    barbecue thrown at a train near Coventry, external left passengers "distressed" and caused service delays lasting three and a half hours, British Transport Police said.

    The metal device was thrown from a bridge and hit the train as it passed through the Dunbar Avenue/Holbrook Way area of the city just before 18:50 on Tuesday. It became wedged underneath the London Midland Service and was dragged along the track as the driver applied the emergency brake.

    Sgt Robert Bowley, in charge of the investigation, said "the consequences could have been so much worse". 

    "The people on the train were left shaken", he continued, "and were fortunate not to have been injured."

  4. Man re-sentenced over tourist murderspublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

    A man has been re-sentenced for murdering two British tourists in Florida five years ago.

    Shawn Tyson was found guilty of killing friends James Cooper, 25, of Hampton Lucy, Warwickshire, and James Kouzaris, 24, from Northampton, in April 2011.

    Circuit Judge Charles E Roberts told the Florida court Tyson "killed in cold blood two men who posed no threat".

    Tyson's earlier conviction was thrown out in 2014 because he was 16 when the crime was committed. He has been sentenced to two life terms.

    A flood warning has been issued for the River Cole in Coleshill from Cole End to Coleshill Industrial Estate.

    The Environment Agency has also issued four flood alerts , external for the rivers Cole, Tame, Anker and Blythe.

  6. Two injured in Kingsbury collisionpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

    Two men have been taken to hospital after being injured in the collision in Kingsbury , externalthis morning, says the ambulance service.

    The driver of a van, a man in his 50s, had to be released by fire crews. He's been taken to Heartlands Hospital.

    A man believed to be in his 40s, who was driving a car and described as "walking wounded", has been taken to George Eliot hospital.

    Heavy rain yesterday evening and overnight caused flash flooding in parts of Birmingham and the Black Country, Coventry and Staffordshire. 

    Many roads were flooded and the area's fire services took hundreds of calls about the impact of the bad weather. 

    There are several Environment Agency flood warnings and alerts in place, external for parts of the West Midlands this morning.

    The police have just given me some more details about the crash in Kingsbury this morning.

    They were called just before 07:00 to a collision involving two cars and one van.

    One driver had to be released from a vehicle.
