    Heavy rain will move in this evening, and there'll be gales. Temperatures won't fall much below 50F (10C)

    There are amber warnings for rain from Storm Desmond (in the yellow circle) tomorrow. Forecasters say between 150mm to 200mm (6-8in) of rain could fall on high ground, and more flooding is likely.

  3. Carlisle boss hopes to take QPR defenderpublished at 17:50

    Carlisle United manager Keith Curle hopes to offer trialist Queen's Park Rangers defender Addison Garnett a short-term deal with the club.

    The club are waiting for clearance from FIFA before signing the 19-year-old, who has spent the last month training with the United squad.

    Carlisle visit Welling United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

  4. Councillors reject plan at "Penrith pong" workspublished at 17:45

    Councillors have refused permission for a new building at a factory near Penrith that's been the focus of a long-running row over smells.

    The company proposed a new building where vehicles carrying animal protein could be parked. It would be designed to contain and filter out odours.

    Officers said that because the new building would extend outside the plant's existing boundary into open countryside, its impact on the landscape would outweigh any benefits., external

    Councillors at an earlier meeting said they wanted to visit the site before making a decision. Today at the site visit they decided to agree with the officers' recommendation.

  8. Poppi Worthington death: 'No evidence of abuse by father'published at 17:03

    The lawyer representing the father of Poppi Worthington has today told a hearing there was no evidence to substantiate a finding that Barrow toddler Poppi Worthington was sexually abused before she died.

    Thirteen-month-old Poppi died suddenly in December 2012. The pathologist who carried out a post-mortem examination suggested that Poppi may have been been sexually assaulted. 

    At the last day of a Liverpool family court hearing today, Karl Rowley QC, representing Poppi's father, said the pathologist had mis-interpreted some of the evidence and called into question her conclusions. 

    But Jane Cross QC, representing Cumbria County Council, said no credible alternative explanation had been put before the court.

    Mr Justice Peter Jackson will give his judgement in January.

    The A595 remains closed between Thursby Roundabout in Allerdale and Belle Vue Roundabout in Papcastle because of flooding. There's a diversion in operation via the A596.

  10. Poppi Worthington judge hears final lawyers' debatepublished at 16:20

    Lawyers have been making their final submissions in a court hearing that's re-examined the death of a toddler from Barrow.

    Poppi Worthington, who was 13 months old, died suddenly in Barrow in 2012, but details of her death have only been made public in a family court hearing in Liverpool that's now drawing to a close.

    A pathologist who carried out a post-mortem examination said Poppi might have died because of a sexual assault. But today Karl Rowley QC, for her father Paul Worthington, said she'd misinterpreted some of the evidence.

    Jane Cross QC, for Cumbria County Council, defended the pathologist, saying she'd approached the case with great care.

  12. Floods: Warning of more rain this weekendpublished at 15:44

    Weather warnings from the Met Office say there could be up to 100mm (4in) of rain in parts of Cumbria this weekend, and more flooding is likely.

    The heavy rain and winds gusting at up to 70mph are being brought in by a storm the Met Office has just named Desmond, coming off the Atlantic.

    The red warm fronts on this pressure chart for Saturday noon represent streams of moist air that will mean hours of heavy rain for the north of England.

  13. Travel: Overturned lorry blocks A66published at 15:26

  14. Man who punched girlfriend spared jailpublished at 15:10

    A Carlisle man who punched his girlfriend because she had been talking on the telephone has been spared an immediate prison sentence. 

    The court heard Mark Malloy, 21, of Dalton Avenue, hit Naomi Phillipson so hard she was left winded and struggling to breathe. 

    At the time he committed the offence, Malloy was subject to a suspended prison sentence for breaking a man's nose at a pub in the city.

    At Carlisle Crown Court today, he was given a one-year prison sentence suspended for two years. He was also given a 50-day rehabilitation order.

  15. Digital museum goes onlinepublished at 14:50

    Kendal Museum's opening a website this afternoon, external featuring pictures of thousands of items that have never been on public display before.

    It marks the completion of a project called Looking through a Lens that's seen more than 5,000 items from three collections photographed to an extremely high standard and put online. 

    The museum's also created an exhibition including works created by Cumbrian artist Janette Phillips. 

    It's going on tour in the county next year, when the museum's looking for more venues to host it. 

  16. Drivers warned after flood rescuespublished at 14:37

    Drivers are being urged not to risk driving through deep flood water after a number of rescues last night.

    The county's fire service helped a number of drivers stranded in the flooding. There are warnings of more heavy rain this weekend.

    Three schools are closed today because of flooding: Blennerhasset and Nelson Thomlinson in Wigton and St Bridget's Church of England School in Cockermouth. All should be open on Monday.

  17. Watchdog confirms hospitals are out of special measurespublished at 13:59

    The government health regulator Monitor has confirmed that the trust that runs hospitals in South Cumbria will come out out of special measures.

    Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission said in their latest report that the Morecambe Bay Trust still required improvement, but was making progress., external

    This morning Monitor said it would be continuing to provide support, external to make sure progress was maintained, especially in maternity services.  A specialist improvement director, Fiona Wise, will continue working with the trust.

  18. Health Secretary launches campaigner's new bookpublished at 13:41

    It was James Titcombe's determination to find out why his baby son Joshua died soon after birth in 2008 that finally prompted regulators to identify the scale of shortcomings in maternity services at the Furness General Hospital in Barrow.
