Electricity North West says it's been preparing for bad weather over Christmas night and Boxing Day, when the Met Office has issued an amber warning for heavy rain., external

Engineers have been ensuring key substations are protected, a spokesman said. 

Earlier this month about 55,000 homes in the Lancaster area lost power because of flooding.

In an open letter on the Accrington website, boss John Coleman continued: "The quotes published were just a small snippet of a longer interview.

"In that interview, my sympathy for the people who have suffered massively from the floods was made abundantly clear.

"I have no issue with your football club, this was a catastrophic flood and I wish you the best of luck in overcoming the hardship it has caused."

Carlisle have been given a boost in their attempts to restore Brunton Park to a playable state after learning they are eligible to apply for contributions from the Premier League Fans Fund.

The Met Office has now issued an amber warning for rain over the early hours of Boxing Day and beyond, external.

It says: "There remains uncertainty over the exact location and intensity of the heaviest rainfall. 

"However, around 60 to 80mm of rain is likely to accumulate during Boxing Day, with up to 150mm possible over high ground. 

"If the rainfall amounts, currently predicted, occur over the warning area, given the sensitivities medium impacts are likely."

It says the warning will be reviewed over the coming days.

Accrington Stanley boss John Coleman says he intended no offence to Carlisle United after criticising the Football League's decision to allow them to move home games after flooding in the area.

Carlisle's Brunton Park home was rendered unusable, and they are playing games at three alternative venues.

Coleman was frustrated because Stanley have had two League Two games postponed because of waterlogging.

A man who grabbed a butter knife and confronted two men in Ambleside has been warned by a judge that he could go to prison.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Dwayne Keenan, 40, pleaded guilty to affray and having a bladed article.   

The court was told he felt under threat after an earlier confrontation.

Sentence was adjourned for reports. Recorder Grice told Keenan all options, including custody, remained open.

Fire investigation teams have been at a former fire station in Kenda to find out what started a blaze that left one man dead and another with serious burns.

The emergency services were called to the building in Aynam Road, which is now housing association flats, just before 20:00 last night.

A 22-year-old man, who'd escaped the ground floor flat, is now in a critical condition in hospital in Birmingham being treated for burns.  Firefighters found the body of a second man, who was 20, in the flat.

Forecasters say the rain will start late on Christmas day and fall heavily through much of Boxing Day.  Up to 80mm (3in) of rain is expected widely, with up to 150cm (6in) on higher ground.

Temporary lights at Kirkby Thore are causing queues of several miles and delays of around an hour on the A66.  

It's thought the temporary traffic lights are for a collapsed manhole cover.

Engineers who'd been fixing a complex telephone fault in Grange-over-Sands and Lindale say they'd nearly completed the job when the floods swamped their manholes.

A spokesman for BT said the crews are working around the clock to fix the cables again by Christmas Eve, but renewed flooding might make it impossible.

“People in Grange-over-Sands and Lindale have been incredibly patient and understanding and we want them to know we are working hard to finish this second round of repairs caused by the flooding.”

People in Appleby in Cumbria are mopping-up again after facing their third flood in a month. 

The River Eden came over its banks again last night, with the town having barely recovered from the devastating floods left by Storm Desmond. 

The latest floods were much less severe, but further storm weather is already predicted in the run-up to Christmas. 

Appleby residents like Roy Ashley from Appleby Garage, and Clifford Curley from The Westmorland Building Centre, say people in the town desperately need some respite.

The warning relating to the Eden at Rickerby Park and Stoneyholme golf course in Carlisle has now been stood down.

Tom and a team of craftsmen will be on call from Christmas night, and he's not looking forward to the weather. 

In any case, the craftsmen will return to work on Monday, repairing homes flooded by Storm Desmond.

Police say they're not treating the death of a 20-year-old man in a fire in Kendal as a criminal investigation.

The fire in Aynam Road swept through a ground-floor flat in a former fire station converted into housing association flats.  

A second man who suffered serious burns is now in a critical condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated and it is not yet known if it was related to the severe weather.
