Liberal Democrat leader and Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron says:

    Quote Message

It does mean that children are being failed, it does mean that families are not as safe as they should be and we have to understand what that means.. and by and large it does not mean we’ve got terrible social workers in Cumbria - it actually means we've got very good ones, and not enough of them, and that they are being poorly led."

  5. UK floods: Drone provides researchers with unique datapublished at 09:40

    Mark Kinver
    Environment reporter, BBC News

Images from an unmanned aerial vehicle suggest excessive management of floodplains limit their ability to hold water and slow the flow of floodwater.

Drainage channels on floodplains meant water was returned to rivers too quickly, exacerbating flooding further downstream, researchers observed.

They added a drone allowed them to gather a unique view of the impact of the floods that hit northern England.

  7. Poppi Worthington case shows legal system 'flaws'published at 09:11

The case of 13-month-old Poppi Worthington after a family court judge ruled that she'd been sexually assaulted by her father shortly before her death shows problems with the legal system, an expert says.

Mr Justice Peter Jackson made the ruling during a custody hearing. Her father Paul Worthington (pictured) denies any wrong-doing.

Doctor Hannah Quirk, a criminal law expert from Manchester University, believes the case highlights flaws in the legal system.

She says: "This is one of a line of cases recently where, rightly or wrongly, criminal proceedings haven't been able to follow, and other agencies have taken it upon themselves to pronounce their guilt.

"And my worry is that this is sort of leading to a new class of, or potentially leading to a new class of, almost ghost miscarriages of justice, where there's no remedy because an official conviction hasn't taken place."
