    A new suite of scanners is being installed at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, with the size of some of the equipment making the task quite a challenge.

    A CT scanner was carefully threaded through doors and corridors, a window will have to be removed to bring in an MRI scanner, and ventilation and cooling units were lifted over the building by a huge crane.

    The £8m project will mean in-patients and outpatients no longer have to mix in the same unit, and give more capacity overall, with more radiographers being hired to operate the services.

    Part of the new development will open later this year, and the rest should follow in spring next year.

  3. Cannabis farm 'gardener' is jailed for 15 monthspublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2020

    A debt-ridden man who was put to work as the gardener at a sophisticated cannabis factory inside a semi-detached home on a Whitehaven housing estate has been jailed for 15 months.

    Police who raided the house in the Woodhouse area found large quantities of cannabis growing both in the living room and three bedrooms, ultraviolent lights and extractor fans, and windows were covered by thick blackout curtains and plastic sheeting.

    Ervin Nurka, 39, of no fixed address, was found at the house and arrested, and mobile phones and £300 cash were also recovered.

    Nurka, of no fixed address, admitted producing the class B drug and although he initially claimed to have been a victim of modern slavery after entering the UK illegally at the start of 2020, he accepted acting as a gardener “with a degree of independence”.

    The announcement, with less than 12 hours to go, that Carlisle is to be moved from tier one coronavirus regulations to tier two high risk, took a number of those involved by surprise, among them the leader of Cumbria County Council.

    The news first emerged through the county's Chamber of Commerce, where staff noticed the city's name on a government list.

    Rob Johnston, the chief executive of the chamber, said there were still uncertainties, adding: "It's about par for the course for this isn't, it, if you go on the government website and the information we've got it's from midnight tonight, but other parts of the government website don't say when it's going to happen, it really doesn't help, does it?"

    Police have released a CCTV picture of a man they say they want to contact after a convenience store in Workington was robbed at knifepoint.

    Two staff in the shop were threatened, but not injured, in the attack at 23:00 on Wednesday evening at McColls on Harrington Road.

    Det Con James Graham said: "We would advise the public not to approach this person if spotted and instead contact the police."

    The Met Office has posted a yellow weather warning for high winds , externalfor tomorrow, covering the whole of the west of Britain including Cumbria.

    It says winds could gust to 65mph, and possibly higher on exposed coasts and hills.

    The yellow warning for Sunday, external, for heavy rain, has also been extended through to 06:00 on Monday morning.

    A flood warning has been posted for Keswick campsite, as Derwentwater rose after yesterday's rain.

    The lower level of flood alert now covers the areas of the Upper Derwent and the Rivers Rothay, Brathay and Winster in the southern Lake District.

    Two men who admitted burgling a home in Kendal while the occupant was inside have been jailed for 18 months.

    Carlisle Crown Court was told the householder had earlier spoken to the men after he saw them outside his home, shortly afterwards heard a window smashing at the back of the property, and then seen one of them reaching in.

    Police later recovered stolen property and David Morrison, 38, of Wattsfield Road, Kendal, and 40-year-old Martin Buchanan, of Kirkland in the town, both admitted burglary.

    Cumbria's Director of Public Health, Colin Cox, says people must be rigorous in their social distancing they want restrictions to ease before Christmas.

    Dr Cox was speaking after the weekly update on coronavirus in Cumbria showed tere had been 844 new cases in the county in the latest week, up from 722 the previous week.

    Outbreaks of rain will continue through this evening and overnight, accompanied by brisk southwesterly winds.

    It will be a mild night under cloudy skies with the rain clearing later and lowest temperatures from 8C to 11C (46F to 52F).

    There is still a Met Office weather warning, external for tomorrow although the heaviest rain is not expected to return until the evening.

  15. Three flood alerts posted as rain keeps fallingpublished at 17:40

    There are now three flood alerts, external posted for Cumbria, the lowest level of risk, covering the upper Derwent area in the north and the Duddon, Crake, Mill Beck, Brathay, Rothay and Winster in the south.

    Both Coniston Water and Windermere are high, and flooding is possible on low-lying land and roads in all the surrounding areas.

    The Environment Agency says flooding is possible across a large area of northern England, external between now and Sunday.

    There is already one flood alert in place for the upper Derwent and Derwent Water, external, and more are expected.

    Yellow weather warnings cover the whole county and south west Scotland through until late on Sunday, with up to 250mm (10in) expected on the highest fells by the end of the weekend.

    It will be largely cloudy and rain will continue this afternoon, with some heavy bursts of rain in places.

    Cumbrian business leaders say changes to the way the government's supporting jobs after the end of the furlough system should help more local firms survive.

    About 78,000 people in the county have been supported by the furlough system since the first restrictions came in last March, and many businesses still need help after the system ends this weekend.

    Jo Lappin from the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership said the final form of the Job Support Scheme (JSS) provided a lot more help than the earlier proposals from the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, and a recent survey suggested three quarters of businesses now felt that they could survive the next six months.

    She said employees could now work fewer hours to qualify and, secondly, the government will make a bigger cash contribution towards wages so employers don't have to pay so much.

  19. Police appeal for witnesses after man suffers slashed armpublished at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2020

    A man's being questioned after what police say may have been a knife attack in Carlisle last night.

    The victim was treated in hospital for a slash wound to his arm.

    A 43-year-old man from Carlisle was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after the incident in Currock Road, near the Bryan Fell garage, at about 22:20 last night.

    Officers would like to hear from anyone in the area at the time.

  20. Robber threatens staff with knife in Workington attackpublished at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2020

    Police say a man with a knife threatened two staff members in a convenience store in Workington at about 23:00 last night.

    Neither were injured, but the robber took a small amount of money from the McColls store on Harrington Road before making off.
