The rest of the county remains on tier one - medium risk, although a sharp rise in new cases in Carlisle means the city could move to a higher level of restrictions soon.

Assistant Chief Constable Andy Slattery, who chairs the group of health and council representatives leading the county's response to the pandemic, says the decision on tiers depends on more than just the basic level of new infections.

    Quote Message

It's also a matter of what the hospital capacity is like, it's also a question of what the demographic of the people being infected is, if the infection is among young people, that's not as worrying as if the infections are in the older group.

    Quote Message

My understanding of the data is that it's an increase in infection of older people in Carlisle that's particularly giving concern."
