  11. Police investigate disappearance of protected birdspublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 18 May 2021

Police are investigating the suspicious disappearance of two birds from the RSPB reserve at Geltsdale.

The two male Hen Harriers belong to a protected species and were feeding chicks which have since died.

The RSPB says the first bird a young ringtail was last seen on 4 May and the second hasn't been seen since delivering food to the nest on 7 May.

PC Samantha O’Key the forces Wildlife, Rural and Environmental Crime Co-ordinator said: "The two male birds were servicing nests, and as a result both nests have now failed.

"These birds were in good health, in a perfect environment for them to thrive, with plenty of food. It is highly unlikely that the Harriers have died of natural causes."

Last year a male bird went missing in suspicious circumstances.

Steve Garnett who's a warden at RSPB Geltsdale, said: “This is devastating news, for hen harriers, for our hard-working team here at RSPB Geltsdale and for everyone who is rooting for a better outcome for these birds.

“We can make sure they are safe when they are on our land, but of course, they are free to range more widely and we know that not everyone has the best interests of these birds in mind. Hen harriers are illegally killed every year, so we are bound to view these disappearances as suspicious."

  13. Health boss urges others to get vaccinated as he gets jabpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 18 May 2021

Cumbria's director of public health has spent months encouraging people to take up the offer of a Covid-19 vaccine - and today he received his first jab.

Colin Cox, who lives across the Scottish border, was vaccinated in Canonbie.

He said: “Vaccination is absolutely critical to getting us out of this pandemic, particularly as we are now seeing evidence of the spread of new variants.

"The next step of easing lockdown is also reliant on the continued success of the vaccination programme, so it’s crucial for people to get vaccinated in order to give government the confidence to take that next step in June."

Latest data for Cumbria shows 315,000 people have received their first vaccine dose, with 185,000 receiving both doses.

Cumbria's public health director has moved to reassure people about the spread of the Indian variant of Covid-19, as he revealed "fewer than five" cases had been diagnosed in the county.

Colin Cox said the cases were identified close to Lancashire, which has seen a spike in infections since mid-April.

"At this stage we're not proposing to do any other forms of lockdowns or mass testing or anything along those lines," he said.

"We are managing and containing it within our usual processes at the moment."

Across Cumbria more than 300,000 people have been vaccinated with more than half of those receiving both doses.

Currently no-one is being treated for Covid at hospitals in the north of Cumbria.

In the south, the numbers of people receiving hospital treatment is "very, very low", Mr Cox added.
