  1. Reaction as Cumbria goes into tier 2published at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2020

    Tim Farron, the Lib Dem MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, has tweeted the about the restrictions when Cumbria is placed in tier two following the end of the national lockdown.

    It means the rule of six applies outdoors but there is no household mixing anywhere indoors.

    So Cumbria is heading for tier two - high alert when the national lockdown ends on Wednesday 2 December, but what does that mean for us?

    • In tier two you can't socialise with other households indoors
    • You can meet in a group of up to six outside - including in a garden, or a public place
    • Shops, gyms and personal care services (such as hairdressing) can reopen (if Covid-secure)
    • Pubs and bars can only open if they serve substantial meals. Alcohol can be served with that meal
    • Sports can resume with up to 2,000 spectators, or 50% capacity (whichever is smaller)
    • Collective worship, weddings and outdoor sports can resume (with restrictions)
    • Non-essential foreign travel allowed, subject to quarantine rules

    Four people have been arrested during a drugs raid in Barrow.

    The police discovered illegal substances and money at Cote Ley Crescent on Monday 23 November.

    One of those arrested, 18-year-old Joseph Robertson from Liverpool, is expected to appear before magistrates in Barrow today.

    He is charged with possessing class A drugs with intent to supply, possessing cannabis resin and possessing criminal property.

    Two others who were arrested, a woman and a teenage girl, have been released while further inquiries are carried out.

    Another man who was arrested was released with no further action.

    • Temperature at 3000 ft: 2C (36F).
    • Winds: Light winds, from a westerly veering to north-westerly direction during the day with gusts of 10-20 mph for much of the day.
    • Cloud: Patches of mist and fog at first, lifting to 980ft to 1640 ft (300m to 500m) in some areas, but a few places will continue to have some hill mist and fog.
    • Weather: Mist and fog this morning, will lift to low patchy cloud with a few sunny spells in the afternoon. However, a few areas of hill mist and fog will linger in some areas, resulting in a dull day.
    • Visibility: Very poor at first, and continuing to be mostly poor above 980 ft (300 m) and in any low cloud. Good in areas where there are sunny spells due to mist and low cloud lifting.

    A 38-year-old man was left with serious head injuries following an assault, police say.

    He was attacked in the Newland Terrace and Greengate Street areas of Barrow between 21:30 and 21:40 yesterday.

    Detectives, who are talking to residents who live nearby, say they recovered a sharp implement from the scene.

    • Temperature at 3,000ft: 5C to 6C (41F to 43F)
    • Winds: Freshening south to south-westerly winds, gusting around 35-40 mph. The gusts could be a touch higher at the tops, making walking difficult with buffeting
    • Cloud: Cloud bases will be around 600ft to 1,300ft (200m to 400m) in the morning, but they will be rising to 1,300ft to 2,000ft (400m to 600m) in the afternoon
    • Weather: Overcast with spells of rain and drizzle, particularly in the morning. A drier afternoon but remaining quite murky
    • Visibility: Often poor, particularly with the rain and hill fog

    • Temperature at 3,000ft: Around 0C at first rising to 3C (32F to 37F) later in the afternoon.
    • Winds: Freshening south-westerly wind. In the morning, the gusts will be around 30-35mph, increasing in the afternoon to 40-45mph.
    • Cloud: Cloud bases will be around 1,900ft to 2,900ft (600m to 900m) in the morning but the base will decrease to 1,000ft to 2,000ft (300m to 600m) in the afternoon
    • Weather: Some frost in valleys at first. Cloud will thicken and become extensive, bringing some patchy rain.
    • Visibility: Very good in the early morning outside any cloud but it will deteriorate quite widely by the afternoon with the thickening cloud and patchy rain.
