Stobart Group says it is working with others to propose Carlisle Airport could have the status, while the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership has suggested the ports at Barrow and Workington, although few details have been made public.

Some experts point out that Britain will be a low-tariff country, making customs concessions worth much less, but others say reducing regulations such as environmental or planning rules would attract businesses.

Gary Lovatt, of the Federation of Small Businesses in Cumbria, says making sure that not just large companies benefit is the key.

    Quote Message

The thing that we'll want to be looking at is that there will be within these freeports the ability for the smaller businesses to take advantage of that."
