    Cumbria's chief constable, Michelle Skeer, is one of five in the North West to sign an open letter making it clear that the police will target people who break the lockdown rules.

    The police chiefs say they will seek support from the Government and the judiciary, to consider how those who ignore coronavirus-related fines can be brought to justice quickly.

    They say they will concentrate on people who organise large gatherings and music events, repeatedly hold parties or deliberately refuse to self-isolate.

    The chief constables say that so far they have only issued fines as a last resort, preferring to "engage, explain and encourage", but they say a minority of people across the North West seem incapable of complying with the regulations.

  2. Bay councils draw up Covid-19 recovery planpublished at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2020

    A plan to help the economy around the Morecambe Bay area, external to recover from the effects of Covid-19 has been produced.

    Representatives from three local councils, Barrow, South Lakeland and Lancaster, have written to the Chancellor asking him to back their plans with funding over the next two years.

    Suggestions include making the most of the area's potential to develop wind, solar, hydrogen, nuclear and marine technologies.

    There's also suggestions for the agriculture industry, better health services, good quality housing and new jobs.

    Police have made two arrests after a Workington convenience store was robbed for the third time in a week.

    Officers said they were called to McColls on Harrington Road at about 08:00 this morning after reports of two men going in with an axe and a crowbar, and leaving with cash and tobacco.

    Police say two men, both 34 and from Workington, were arrested in the area shortly afterwards on suspicion of robbery.

    The NHS in south Cumbria says that at the moment, it's seeing only 70% of the people it would expect to see about lung cancer.

    It says people shouldn't put off going to their doctors with any worries about cancer, despite fears over coronavirus, as late diagnosis can lower people's chances of survival.

    Dr Neil Smith, a GP and primary care director for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance, said he could understand why people with respiratory problems were reluctant to see their doctor when the message if people had a cough was to stay at home and isolate themselves in case of Covid-19.

    But he said: "If someone has a cough or breathlessness that has gone on for three weeks, there is a risk of lung cancer, especially so for someone who is a smoker or has symptoms like coughing blood or losing weight.”

    Managers at a care home in Kendal have praised staff who blew the whistle after seeing a colleague forcefully spoon hot food into a the mouth of a resident suffering from dementia, and slapping another who required gentle care because of her condition.

    Today a judge at Carlisle Crown Court jailed Carla Dawn Graham, 60, of Vicars Fields in Kendal, for eight months, saying she did not have the temperament or the patience for the work at the Heron Hill care home.

    Afterwards a spokesman for Abbey Healthcare said the case went back to 2018, and staff, whose evidence to the court was that Graham "bullied" colleagues, were always encouraged to come forward if they had concerns.

    "Any allegations of neglect or abuse are treated with the utmost concern by Heron Hill."

    A senior care home worker who was angry, aggressive and violent to three vulnerable elderly residents, forcing food into the mouth of one and slapping another in the face, has been jailed.

    Colleagues of 60-year-old Carla Dawn Graham, of Vicars Fields, Kendal, described her as a “frightening individual” who “bullied them” at the home in Heron Hill in Kendal, but the court was told they turned whistleblowers, telling police what they had seen.

    Graham denied the ill treatment or wilful neglect of the three people who lacked capacity, but was found guilty of three charges after a trial.

    Claire Larton, defending, said Graham accepted the jury’s verdicts “although she maintains her innocence”.

    Jailing Graham for eight months, Judge Nicholas Barker described her three victims as “essentially helpless, extremely vulnerable, unable to do anything for themselves”.

    A convenience store in Workington has been robbed at knifepoint for the second time in a week.

    The robber entered the McColls store in Harrington Road just before 23:00 last night, and escaped towards Northumberland Street with a small amount of cash and tobacco.

    No one was hurt but police who are investigating the attack say they would like to hear from witnesses or anyone with information.

    There's been another steep rise in the number of people in Cumbria dying with coronavirus, according to the latest weekly figures from the Office for National Statistics, external.

    They show 14 people from Cumbria died with Covid-19 in the week up to 23 October, up from nine the previous week, which itself was the highest weekly figure since early June, and that was up from two the previous week.

    The figures are based on death certificates that mention Covid-19, and they bring the total number of deaths in the county to 596.

    However the infection figures for the week ending 30 October are more mixed, showing a fall in new cases in Carlisle, Barrow and Eden, but a rise in South Lakeland, Copeland and Allerdale.

    Police say they are targeting an area of Cleator Moor after a gang of youths attacked a house over a ten-day period, shouting abuse and hurling a brick through a window which hit and injured one occupant in the face.

    Officers say there were five in the group of youths involved, who wore hoodies and masks when they went to Jacktrees Crescent, and they've appealed for help in tracking them down.
