    Community groups all over Cumbria are gearing up again and keen to let people know that they will be there to help them during the new lockdown.

    Loura Allen is the group coordinator of the Appleby Emergency Response Group, which covered the town street by street with support for people unable to leave their homes earlier in the year..

    Down here we may be worrying about lockdown, or the US elections or maybe even Brexit.

    But up towards the 3,000ft (900m) contour, the changing seasons take little notice of all that, and this morning saw the first fairly widespread snow of the winter on the Lake District tops.

    Showers will persist for much of the day today, however easing slightly through the evening.

    It'll stay cloudy too although it will thin slightly later allowing for some sunny spells, with temperatures reaching 7C (44F).

    Showers will continue for most of the night tonight, but they will clear away to the north towards sunrise along with the cloud cover.

    Temperatures will drop to 2C to 5C (36F to 41F).

    There is a yellow Met Office weather warning for heavy rain, external posted through to midnight, and forecasters say that with the ground saturated, an extra 15mm to 50mm could bring more flooding.

  5. Court told of man's 'idiocy' after drinking sanitiserpublished at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2020

    A family man who had lost his job because of the pandemic drank sanitiser while out socialising and kicked a police officer who had arrested him for being drunk and disorderly.

    Wayne Pye, 45, of Glebe Road, Kendal, who Carlisle Crown Court was told was still out of work and currently looking after family “with some measure of success”, admitted assaulting an emergency worker.

    A prosecutor conceded the kick, captured on CCTV, was “one of the least impressive assaults that this court is likely to witness”.

    But Recorder Neville Biddle, imposed a two-year conditional discharge and told the defendant after hearing mitigation: “You fully appreciate the idiocy of your behaviour that night.”

    Police have spent much of the afternoon dealing with the closure of the A5087 between Ulverston and Barrow after this lorry tipped over.

    A recovery truck had arrived when this was taken, and it's hoped that by the time you read this the road will be clear.

  7. Carlisle city sends in bid to ministers for £25m programmepublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2020

    A £25m plan for improvements to Carlisle over the next 10 years has been sent off to the government.

    Carlisle is one of 101 communities in the country given a chance to bid for money from what ministers called the Towns Fund

    The programme, external includes creating a long parkland that will include cycle routes and paths to allow people living in the new st Cuthbert's Garden Village developments, south of the city, ways to get around without using cars.

    Barrow council heard last week that its submission for the towns fund had been approved.

  9. Drugged burglar sentenced for crimes he cannot rememberpublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2020

    A Carlisle man who burgled a family home while high on valium has been given a suspended prison sentence.

    The city's crown court heard 50-year-old David McMillan, from Newlaithes Avenue, had taken about 40 valium tablets and had little memory of what he'd done.

    He had sneaked into one house and gone upstairs, grabbing £10 cash while the family was downstairs, and tried to break into another house in the same street.

    McMillan admitted burglary and an attempted break-in and was given an eight month jail term, suspended for two years, and a rehabilitation order.

    The national organisation representing barristers has highlighted a backlog of more than 200 cases at Carlisle Crown Court, urging the government to invest more money in local court services and legal advice.

    In a paper to treasury ministers, external, the Bar Council says this would not only help deal with crime in the region, but also attract investment, provide a confidence boost to the local economy and help people in need access justice locally.

    The council adds that Carlisle also has just one publicly funded legal advice provider for housing and none for welfare support issues.

    A plan to create a brand new "alternative provision" school in Barrow has been hailed as "an exciting time for education".

    Community leaders praised the proposals for a new 40-place school, which would be built on Channelside and support up to 25 young people with social, emotional and mental health needs, as "wonderful".

    County councillor Anne Burns, Cumbria’s children’s services cabinet member, said: "Alternative provision is part of our inclusion strategy, so to get this up and running would be wonderful.”

    The application by Cumbria County Council, external to Barrow Borough Council says the school has to be an adaptable building, able to change use throughout its lifetime of approximately 60 years, with the option to extend the building if pupil numbers grow.

  12. Police start campaign after 1,000 sex offences this yearpublished at 13:05 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2020

    Cumbria Police say they dealt with 377 reports of rapes and more than 700 other sexual offences between the start of this year and the end of October.

    The figures have been released as part of the force's plan to raise awareness of sexual offences this month.

    Officers have now started a campaign to highlight the issues because, they say, the majority of rapes are committed by people known to the victim, not by strangers.

    Met Office forecasters have posted a yellow warning, external, saying between 50mm and 90mm (2in and 3.5in) of rain fell last night, causing flooding problems on the number of roads, and heavy showers may mean this recurs this afternoon and evening.

    Cumbria's tourism industry is viewing the renewed lockdown with "deep concern", having already lost the larger part of the summer income that would normally keep businesses afloat through the winter.

    Gill Haigh (pictured), the managing director of Cumbria Tourism, says the extension of the furlough scheme, allowing businesses 80% of the cost of keeping on staff for whom there's no work, would be welcome, but what was really needed was a long-term funding scheme to see the industry through the winter.

    The Met Office has posted a new yellow warning for more heavy rain, external for parts of the county.

    The warning says that heavy showers this afternoon will merge into a longer period of rain that could bring down another 30mm (1.2in) on low ground and up to 50mm (2in) on high ground.

    The Met Office says that with the ground saturated from the weekend, there could be further flooding.

    • Winds: Strong south-westerly breezes turning north-westerly later, gusts to 50mph at times
    • Cloud: In the early morning bases may be between 2,000ft to 3,000ft (600m to 900m) but dropping before noon to between 1,000ft and 1,600ft (300m to 500m)
    • Weather: Cloudy with frequent heavy and blustery showers from the west throughout the day. Along hills or at summits, precipitation may fall as sleet especially in the heaviest showers, and there will be a significant chill factor with the strong winds
