    At 04:25 this morning, Allerdale's returning officer Andrew Seekings apologised for the length of time the count was taking. He said boundary changes had created some "massive wards".

    The declaration had originally been expected at 02:00.

    Four years ago Independent Mike Starkie had to rely on second choice votes to edge Labour.

    This time he strolled to victory by picking up well over 50% of first choice votes.

    Allerdale Council's former deputy leader, Labour's Mark Fryer, lost his seat in the Stainburn and Clifton ward.

    The two seats went to independents

    Mr Fryer said he was disappointed, but he added "we've been here before".

    When asked if he was surprised by the rise of the independents in Allerdale he replied "yes and no"

    The Lib Dems kept control of South Lakeland Council, where the Greens gained a seat for the first time.

    Lib Dems gained three seats, Conservatives lost four and Green gained one.

    The new make-up of the council is 32 Lib Dems, 15 Conservatives, three Labour and one Green.

    Copeland Conservative MP Trudy Harrison says frustration over Brexit is behind low turnout and voter apathy.

    Turnout in the mayoral election in Copeland is 33.5%.

    She said: "I think we always knew this was going to be a difficult election. The public are absolutely fed up with us lot in Parliament faffing about over Brexit.

    "They expect that we should have left the European Union and we haven't."
