    The MP Tim Farron says he believes ministers may relax salary limits for migrants which may make it more difficult for hotels in the Lake District to recruit overseas.

    Mr Farron, the Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, raised the issue with the Culture Secretary Nicky Morgan in the Commons this morning and was was told she was "very aware of the issue" and was actively reviewing the salary issue.

    Wes Hunter, a climber who grew up in Keswick, has joined the team of three assessors who will take turns to climb Helvellyn or one of the other high Lakeland fells every day though the winter to assess weather and snow conditions.

    Controversial plans for a 27-home estate on the historic gateway to Cockermouth have now been given the green light.

    The proposals for Low Road were thrown out in April by Allerdale’s planning panel amid fears that the houses would spoil the area around The Fitz, a landmark Georgian building.

    But there are a number of new councillors on the committee after May’s election and they voted the plans through after hearing that the developer had pledged to move some of the planned homes back by 10m.

    It's holding a series of events at the Shakespeare Centre off Highgate from today until Saturday, external, encouraging people to discuss ways that Kendal could be improved.

    Police say a jogger may have vital information about a fatal crash that claimed the life of a teenager from Carlisle.

    Gavin Helps died at the scene of the incident on 22 September near a railway bridge at Rockcliffe, which involved a VW Polo.

    Officers say thay are particularly trying to trace a jogger seen in the area at about 17:00 that day.

    They renewed an appeal for anyone who saw the Polo at the time in the north Carlisle or Kingstown areas, especially if they have webcam footage, to come forward.

    Cumbrian athlete Nick Miller could only manage a first throw best of 75.31m in the final of the men's hammer at the World Championships as his involvement ended at the half-way stage.

    However, his elimination wasn't without controversy after his second throw, which would have won him the silver medal, was ruled as a foul despite inconclusive TV evidence of his foot leaving the circle.

    It's understood his appeal against the decision has been rejected.

  13. Police seek witnesses to motorcycle crashpublished at 08:11 British Summer Time 3 October 2019

    Police are appealing for information about a collision in Barrow, which left a motorcyclist with serious injuries.

    A motorcycle and Ford Focus were involved at the junction of Abbots Vale and Bridgegate Avenue, just after 07:00 on Tuesday.

    The 38-year-old rider was taken to Royal Preston Hospital, but the 27-year-old woman who was driving the car wasn't seriously injured.

  16. Guide dog, Bertie, refused a stay at a Penrith guest housepublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 2 October 2019

    A woman from Carlisle who has visual impairments says she was made to feel excluded by a guest house owner who refused to allow her to stay there with her guide dog.

    Lydia Hulme had booked to stay at the Ashberry Guest House in Penrith next month so she could attend a party.

    The room was booked through an online agency but the guest house said the guide dog, Bertie, could not stay because of its "no pets" policy.

    The owner, Vanda Sturch, told the BBC today that she was not aware she was breaking the law.

    Lydia Hulme has now booked another hotel in Penrith, and Bertie is going with her.

  18. Joshua Hoole: Soldier 'had to finish first' in fatal marchpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 2 October 2019

    The father of a soldier who died during an army fitness test has told an inquest his son felt he had to finish first to progress his career.

    Cpl Joshua Hoole, who was 26, died on a routine physical assessment in Brecon on a hot day in July 2016.

    His death came three years after three army reservists died during an SAS selection march in the Brecon Beacons.

    His father Phillip Hoole, from Carlisle, told the inquest his son "felt he really had to come first [on the march] to get a slot on the course."

  19. Students recognised for making nature reserve and woodlandpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 2 October 2019

    A group of students who set up a nature reserve on their university campus and planted a community woodland have been highly commended at an awards ceremony.

    Ambleside Conservation Society, external, which is made up of about 50 students from the University of Cumbria, also worked with primary school children to help them grow their own food and explore their environment.

    The students were highly commended in the volunteer team of the year section at the North West Charity Awards in Manchester.
