    Tents, camping chairs and wellington boots were among the items collected during a beach clean on Walney.

    Apprentices from the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow worked with the Cumbria Wildlife Trust to clear litter from the South Walney Nature Reserve, external as part of their training.

    The beaches are a Site of Special Scientific Interest, external which means access is not usually allowed.

    Cumbria Wildlife Trust says the team of fitters, fabricators, steelworks and electricians did a "brilliant job" of removing the litter.

    It happened at 12.45 and involved two vehicles. The police say early indications are that there were no serious injuries.

    A man's been warned he could face a life sentence after stabbing another man in the face outside a Wigton pub.

    It took a jury at Carlisle Crown Court just half an hour to find Scott Topping guilty of attempted murder.

    Earlier jurors had heard how the 39-year old from Mulligan's Court had just missed Robert Pattinson's artery when he stabbed him outside the Throstles Nest pub.

    Mr Pattinson needed emergency surgery to have the knife removed from his face.

    Topping will be sentenced on 25 October.

    The jury in the trial of a Wigton man accused of attempted murder has retired to consider its verdict.

    Carlisle Crown Court heard Scott Topping stabbed another man with a large knife outside the Throstles Nest pub.

    Jurors were told the knife was left buried in his victim's face and had to be removed during emergency surgery with "extreme difficulty".

    Mr Topping, 39 of Mulligans Court, has admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and four other offences.

    He denies attempted murder.

    The estimated cost of protecting properties in Kendal from flooding has gone up from £24m to £72m.

    The town was the worst hit by Storm Desmond in 2015 with 2,150 properties flooded, external.

    The Environment Agency says the cost has increased as the plans have got more detailed.

    West Cumbria's new police officers have made 217 arrests since they were appointed just over a year ago, according to the county's police and crime commissioner, external.

    Last year, Peter McCall imposed a £12 increase on council tax to pay for an extra 10 officers in Allerdale and Copeland.

    He says they:

    • made 217 arrests
    • carried out 311 stop-searches
    • dealt with more than 120 traffic offences
    • carried out 43 search warrants at properties

    Now he's asking the government for a further 200 officers for the county.

    A woman has been threatened and assaulted by three men in a burglary at a house in Carlisle.

    Cumbria Police say the men went into the house on Orchard Street at 20:00 yesterday and demanded money.

    The woman, who is in her 30s, suffered a minor hand injury.

    They are asking people living in the area who might have seen something suspicious to get in touch.

    Roadworks on the main road linking Penrith with the North Pennines will be temporarily lifted today so people can get to the Alston Moor Lamb Sale.

    The A686 at Meathaw Hill was closed last Monday for three weeks while roadworks are carried out, external.

    It means lengthy diversions for people travelling during the day between Alston and Penrith.

    Barrow-in-Furness is struggling to cope with underage drinking. More children are admitted to hospital for alcohol consumption here than anywhere else in England.

    NHS Digital figures suggest one in 10 children aged 11-15 had drunk alcohol in the previous week, and nearly a quarter of 15-year-olds describing themselves as having recently been "drunk".
