  11. Water runs again in Eden homes after pipe is fixedpublished at 09:59 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2020

Water has started to run again in some of the homes and businesses in the parts of Eden hit after a main pipeline was washed away in Storm Ciara at the weekend.

United Utilities says it will be a slow process getting everyone back on the supply, as it takes millions of litres to fill the huge network of pipes and tanks supplying the 8,000 properties from Kirby Stephen and Brough across of Shap and Threlkeld that have seen pressures drop or the taps run dry.

    Water tanker turning on road

If the system has header tanks, they are near the road at Shap Summit on the A6, where a shuttle-service of tankers to pump in water, and gritters and snow ploughs to clear the route have worked through the night, with other traffic kept off.

    Quote Message

It's very difficult to say precisely which area will come back on when, but as a general rules of thumb, the lower down you are in a valley, the less water pressure you need, you'll come on a bit quicker, the higher up you are on a hill, it may take a bit longer."

  19. Warning over Copeland crematorium price increasepublished at 16:19 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service
    John Connell

A crematorium price hike in West Cumbria will hit people when they are at their most vulnerable, a Copeland councillor has warned.

Jackie Bowman, a Labour councillor, expressed her “disappointment” with increases set out in the mayor’s budget as it was passed this week.

But Mayor Starkie insisted that the prices were lower “in real terms” than they were five years ago because fees and charges had gone up at less than the rate of the inflation.

Cremation for a person over the age of 16 will rise from £749 to £770 under new prices, while a five line entry in the book of remembrance will go from £115 to £120.
