    Today will be another very windy day with a risk of westerly gales in exposed areas.

    There will be some sunshine, but with squally showers too.

    These will be wintry on high ground and maybe at lower levels at times too.

    Maximum temperatures should reach about 6C (43F).

  2. Clean-up operation begins after Storm Ciara floodingpublished at 07:09 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2020

    Dozens of homes and businesses are beginning a clean-up after their properties were flooded by Storm Ciara on Sunday.

    Appleby was the worst-hit area and rescue services helped to pump out about 20 properties.

    Kendal, Keswick and Shap also saw severe flooding and Warwick Road in Carlisle also suffered from surface water after 151.8mm (6in) of rain fell in the county in 24 hours.

    • Travel disruption continues, with an inspection of rail tracks between Barrow and Carlisle, where services were cancelled on Sunday
    • Appleby Grammar School, Appleby Primary and Stramongate Primary in Kendal are closed
    • Environment Agency flood warnings, external remain in place for Appleby and Carlisle, along with lower level flood alerts, which are in force around the county
    • There is also a Met Office weather warning for snow and ice in force for much of Cumbria from 15:00 today until 23:59 on Tuesday
    • Stagecoach evacuated its Carlisle Willowholme depot late on Sunday as a precaution against rising surface water. Buses were moved on to Lowther Street

    Motorists are being warned to take extra care, as along with the standing water, there will be debris on some roads.

    Across the North West, more than 20,000 properties lost power on Sunday. Electricity North West says its engineers have restored power to the majority.
