  2. Council backs down in market rowpublished at 13:01

    Bakewell market traders won't have to pay for stalls they don't use on the Christmas bank holiday Monday, after a u-turn by the local authority.

    Derbyshire Dales District Council had threatened to charge traders a full day's rent whether or not they opened on 28 December - despite them indicating in a vote that they were not keen on trading that day.

    Now the authority has admitted it got things wrong and has agreed to waive the charge.

  4. Man charged with spray-painting horsepublished at 12:31

    Police say a man has been charged with spray-painting a horse's face, external in Unstone earlier this year.

    The 26-year-old, from Dronfield, is also accused of putting graffiti on a bus shelter, play equipment and a vehicle during the same night in October.

    Fans will be able to enjoy a free tea, coffee or a hot chocolate at half-time only during Tuesday's home game against Bristol City.

  6. Drink-drive arrest after Matlock crashpublished at 12:00

    A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving following a crash involving a car and a bus yesterday.

    It happened in Bakewell Road in Matlock at about 16:25.

    Nobody on the bus was injured but the car's driver received treatment for a minor head injury after being bailed.

    Premier League referee Lee Mason will take charge of Derby County's home game against Championship leaders Brighton on Saturday.

    Mason has booked 43 players in 13 matches this season, with one red card. He last took charge of Derby at Birmingham in August.

    Mark Reid posted: "The planners must be Forest fans."

    But Alan Mitchell wrote: "So what exactly does a football team need to train? A football pitch sized piece of grass, probably with a few lines and a couple of goals either end perhaps? I'm guessing Moor Farm already has that?"

    Derby County fans have reacted furiously on social media to a recommendation that the expansion of the club's training ground should be blocked.

    The club wants to make Moor Farm one of the best training facilities in Europe but planners in Erewash say it's unsuitable for the greenbelt.

    Supporters say they can't understand why houses are allowed on the edge of Oakwood but not football facilities.

    Councillors are due to make a decision on the plans next week.

    Godfrey Meynell's decision to auction a Joseph Wright painting to raise money for Syrian refugees comes 12 years after the land-owner travelled to Iraq to act as a human shield against bombings by the US and its allies.

    The auction is set to take place this evening with bids expected to start at about £100,000.

  16. 'Awesome' Joseph Wright painting to be auctionedpublished at 08:48

    We're talking today about a painting which is due to be auctioned at Sotheby's by the Meynell family to raise money for Syrian refugees.

    Godfrey Meynell says: "It's an original Joseph Wright which my three times great grandfather received in part exchange for a debt in 1840.

    "It's a picture of a girl called Julia, who I think is the niece of Caesar, and she's been put in a cave and left there to drown, although I believe she was subsequently rescued.

    "It's a splendid cave, but the figure is not terribly impressive. Nonetheless, it's a fairly awesome picture because of its size and the cave."
