  2. Why the city council is so strapped for cashpublished at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Chris Doidge
    BBC Radio Derby political reporter

Derby City Council says city authorities have done disproportionately badly out of the government's funding decisions.

Like Nottingham, the majority of homes are in Band A for council tax. That means the council tax doesn't bring in as much money as it might do if the city's homes were bigger.

Also, many people who work in Derby live just outside the city's official border and that means their council tax goes elsewhere.

  3. Budget cuts comparedpublished at 09:06 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2016

    Chris Doidge
    BBC Radio Derby political reporter

Derby's cutting £23m from its budget this year.

    In comparison, Nottingham's cutting £21m, Stoke's cutting £27m and Leicester's trying to save a whopping £45m.

Yet despite being at the lower end of things, Derby's budget is at the more dramatic end of the scale, in terms of services being cut.

That's partly because Derby's smaller than the other councils, so £23m in Derby is a bigger slice of the pie than £23m would be to Nottingham.

Pauline Latham told BBC Radio Derby: "Derby City Council haven't actually prepared for these cuts that they should have known were coming along stream and what they should have been doing is over the last few years looking at how they could maximise the income to the council.

"They're absolutely making Derby city a place that nobody will want to live in, nobody will want to come and work here because they're losing what everybody loves about Derby and that is appalling."
