    "Mia was vivacious and extremely funny. She didn't take any prisoners. She had a cutting wit but she was a very compassionate girl. She had a deep love, particularly for small children," she said.

    Nicola Hawkridge-Chung, Mia's sister, has praised Mr Jackson for his attempts to try and shield her from the attacker. 

    "I don't think there are any words to describe what [Mr Jackson's] done, and what he tried to do, for Mia," she said.  

    "Not many people would have that level of bravery to put themselves in harm's way, especially considering what was happening at the time."

    A man who tried to save Derbyshire backpacker Mia Ayliffe-Chung from being stabbed to death has been nominated for a bravery award.

    Tom Jackson tried to shield Mia from the attacker but was stabbed himself and died a week later. 

    Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has nominated him for a posthumous bravery award.

    "It's kind of annoying because for these past four years now we've been promised a pool," he said. 

    "I think by the time I've finished swimming we might have a pool in Derby, but we've really got to push it now. 

    "It upsets me how many kids in Derbyshire need a 50 metre pool."
