Just last month McClaren told BBC Sport he still had hopes of being a manager and said: "I still have a few years left in me yet on the field."
He said he had recently begun studying towards a Masters degree in Sporting Directorship at Manchester Metropolitan University with the hope of one day running his own football club.

Derby's Labour group says it will respect the decision of a UKIP councillor not to defect after issuing a statement this morning saying Derwent UKIP councillor Bill Wright had switched sides.
Baggy Shanker, a senior Labour councillor, said Mr Wright had applied to join the party last week, signed a form and was aware they would release a statement today.
However, he said Mr Wright had since "changed his mind and decided to stay with UKIP", which they respected.

Rams president and chief executive, Sam Rush, says: "We enjoyed some fantastic and memorable moments under Steve during his previous tenure in charge.
"Steve's arrival and subsequent work helped transform how we played our football.
"Steve's time at Derby came to a premature end and I know he regrets that greatly. He values hugely his relationship with our supporters and I know that he will work very hard to ensure that the special connection returns."

Maling had inflicted injuries on Ms Gough over a number of years, some serious, leading to her needing medical treatment on many occasions.
Attorney General, Jeremy Wright QC MP, referred Maling’s sentence to the Court of Appeal as unduly lenient.
After today's hearing at the Court of Appeal, he said: "This was one of many violent attacks the offender inflicted on the deceased over a number of years, and this attack lasted several days.
“I hope this increased sentence gives some comfort to Ms Gough’s family at this difficult time.”

A man who killed his girlfriend, who he regularly beat, has had his sentence extended to 15 years.
Andrew Maling, 47, was sentenced to 10 years in June for the manslaughter of Amy Gough in Sandiacre.
The 34-year-old died when she arrived at hospital in May 2015 after a long weekend of beatings from Maling.

Shocked is an understatement considering the nature of Steve McClaren's departure.
Though he was ultimately sacked, McClaren damaged lots of relationships at the club by never bringing to an end the links with Newcastle. In the eyes of some, that derailed Derby's promotion campaign.
Mel Morris is a big fan of McClaren's quality as a coach, but was part of the group that sacked him. If that relationship has been repaired then it will happen.

Based on what I've seen so far, I'd say the Derby County fan base is split on Steve McClaren's potential return.
That said, the fans were also split on his departure, and Paul Clement's appointment, and Nigel Pearson's!
