    A petition against the closure of Derby's Central Library has gathered almost 3,000 signatures in three weeks.

    The idea is to close and move the facility to the Council House as part of a £2.5m redevelopment of its ground floor.

    The government is denying its plans to overhaul the railways amount to privatisation.

    Ministers want Network Rail, which is publicly owned, to share responsibility for running the tracks with the private train-operating companies.

    Nick Brown, from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, has been talking about the dusky thrush that's exciting birdwatchers in Beeley.

    He said: "Normally migration is in October and finishes in November, so this bird has probably been here for a while.

    "The bird breeds in Siberia and they look like a redwing. It is about the size of a blackbird.

    "It tends to eat berries. Once the berries dry up it'll probably just disappear after a while. It may try to go south as it has this instinct to go south in the autumn."

    A man suffered serious facial injuries when he was attacked by three men, external shortly after leaving the Association nightclub in Ripley.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to the assault, which happened in Church Street on 23 October.

    • They are made up of more than a dozen slabs which were put in place in the middle of the 19th century and became popular with Victorian tourists
    • Fossil stones can be spotted in some of the steps

    • The stones were renovated in 2010 with limestone blocks controversially placed on top of them which the National Trust said had "improved their condition"
