    Malcolm Turnbull's letter expressed sympathy over Mia Ayliffe-Chung's death in August and promised to look at the rules regarding backpackers on working holidays in Australia.

    He said: "Working holidays encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between Australia and participating countries and my Government is strongly committed to deterring and penalising employers that exploit these workers."

    Since her daughter died in August, Rosie Ayliffe has been campaigning for more protection for backpackers in Australia.

    She's welcomed the pledge from Malcolm Turnbull to provide an extra £20m to help keep them safe.

    She said: "It's two tightly written pages addressing everything in detail that I've brought up.

    "He seems to me to be acknowledging the connection between what happened with Tom [Jackson] and Mia and the situation for backpackers generally and that's fairly crucial in terms of the campaign."

    The Australian prime minister has personally written to the mother of murdered Derbyshire backpacker Mia Ayliffe-Chung pledging to look into her concerns about the safety of travellers.

    Mia was stabbed to death in August while working to extend her visa on a farm in Queensland.

    Her mother Rosie, from Cromford, said Malcolm Turnbull's involvement was a very important step.
