  13. Derby architect shares London tower fire cladding concernspublished at 08:48 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Gavin Bevis
    BBC Local Live

A retired Derby architect who helped to design the London estate where the Grenfell Tower block was situated says questions need to be asked about cladding added to the building before this week's fire.

Derek Latham, who was not involved in designing the tower itself, said: "Looking at what happened, it certainly seems as if this cladding system has got an awful lot to answer for and will need to be investigated.

"I don't know whether that cladding system has been used on other towers but if it has then it's very urgent that they are investigated.

"It may be that there's something particularly strange has happened here - a combination of factors that were not predicted by the building research station when they looked at the materials that were being used - and if so that might mean a review of a much wider number of cladding systems."

Harley Facades, the company that fitted the panels to the building, said in a statement: "At this time, we are not aware of any link between the fire and the exterior cladding to the tower."

Rydon, which carried out the renovation tower block, said the work met all fire regulations and insisted that building control and safety standards had been fully met.
